This is just an experiment for myself to see if I could reach 48 hours without sleep. Started at 12:00 on Wednesday, still going now at 41 hours (the joys of being a student!)

Things are just starting to get a little bit hazy now, having trouble concentrating a bit. Very slight dizzyness as well, hopefully that will fade after I have a shower. Doesn't help that I don't drink tea of coffee, so no caffeine boost for me!

Whats the longest you have gone without sleep?

well didnt experiment... but I have been so busy that I have not been able too and done... now 53 hours, and I'm working nights so this is my second night shift without sleep... not feeling anything :p

Probably five nights dodging sleep staying awake due to the internet.

Brain becomes utterly worthless for concentrating on work, lectures, anything that requires sustained mental effort but doesn't have any real interest for you.

If stuck at a desk for long periods attempting to do the above, probably end up half conciously nodding, falling into brief naps...

Interesting thread....I often work nights, never have an issue with sleepiness but find that at about 6am when i have to interact with other people and be alert, i have infact become a total loon. I drink a lot of coffee for pleasure rather than to medicate but am considering moderating my intake as in large quantities it has a negative effect. Furthermore i do enjoy the hyper feeling of being over tired.

Hmm, I guess I'm simply not used to it, university lifestyle means quite a few very late lie-ins!

Also had a very crappy week for sleep. After I got up at Tuesday morning 8am I've had at total of 6 hours or so worth of sleep up to now. The joys of a 12 hour shift at day and 10 hours at night. Was standing in for some mug that's playing sick. Really tired now.

Can easily go two days without any sleep :p

It's funny when you are doing things during those days and you are like yea, I don't feel any tired at all. And then you think back about it later and cant remember anything!

I've managed to stay up for about 30 hours, but that was doing stuff, I doubt I could do that if I was just sitting round the house.

The odd thing was after those 30 hours I got in to bed and couldnt get to sleep for ages, I guess my body didnt know what to do.

At 24 hours I was on a train out of London bored and that was probably the hardest part to stay awak through. I did put this on my facebook though "been awake for 24 hours and haven't even stopped a nuke,Jack Bauer would be dissapointed in me!"

Done 2 days without sleep before to avoid jet lag. Really didn't like it all that much because I love sleep.

Stayed awake for 47 hours once and my how it trashed me.
I used to work for Nissan many years ago delivering new special order cars to dealerships using a Nissan Patrol and trailer.....the three days before August the 1st were absolutely mental.......I survived by swallowing loads of ProPlus pills washed down with coffee and cola.
Was advised to eat as much as I could before going to sleep as waking up mid sleep through hunger would really mess me up.
Slept for 18 hours when I finally got my head down :D

When I was younger (maybe 12ish) I struggled from really bad insomnia, it would not be unusual for me to go 3-4 days without sleep, sleep 24 hrs the next and then repeat. I managed to get on top of it but still struggle if my patterns are mixed up, but it does mean I can do weekend long bender without sleeping :)

Brain gets totally fried after 60-72hrs, basic tasks become an ordeal and concentration is almost zero. I found that i could train myself to do certain tasks no matter what, but it was hard.

There were (are?) sleep therapy tests you can sign up to if you don't want to waste your new found ability :)

longest I've gone is 40 hours with no sleep, everything becomes more difficult, and you realise why it would be so dangerous to drive for example after so little sleep.

Is it true a person will die if they go for a week with no sleep, yet live if they go a week without food?

I did a 72 hour stay awake for charity a few years back. Energy drinks and coffee for the win. They only really last for so long though before you become a zombie.

Jack Bauer doesn't seem to have a problem staying awake.

I'm starting nightshift on Tue at 22:00 - though I'm not planning on going anywhere near that length of time without sleep. It's been a few years since I last worked a nightshift but I'm sure my body will readjust to it.

The best part is my weekend started yesterday at 14:00 when I finished, five days off work without using any holidays up :D
