I'm using a 780 at the moment which is struggling with the HTC Vive but is otherwise fine with my monitor (Dell 1440p 144z G-sync)

Money's a bit tight at the moment and I'm wondering if a good upgrade choice 480 for c.£200 would be that much worse than a 1070 for c.£350? The 480 seems like a better value card but is it foolish to be considering it when I would lose the benefits of G-sync?

Edit- more detail:

The main GPU-intensive things I use the PC for are VR games and some RTS/open world PC games (the likes of Skyrim, Civilisations), my 780 is struggling with both at the high end

The vibe I'm getting is that the 1070 is the better choice but is it worth almost double the price? I had thought previously that the 480 was only just behind it in terms of performance but looks like I was wrong :p. I could potentially hold out till Vega to see if 1070s would drop to a more affordable price but that would be based on hope.

If the 1070 is definitely the better choice I can always fork out the extra 150 and live off tesco value meals for a month or so.. :D

If you can afford it the 1070 would be the one to go for, better then the 480 at 1440p and you would keep the benefit of gsync.

There are some really good deals on the 8gb 480s at the moment, but the performance is, a fair bit behind the 1070.

480 will run most things (bar a few examples) at 40+ FPS at 1440p at the preset ultra setting. If you need better than that go for the 1070 :)

What games / applications are you looking at running on it?

1070 would be ideal, 480 if on a budget. The 480 is the competitor for the 1060, the 1070 is a model up for arguments sake.

The 1060 and 480 own it at 1080p resolution and can manage 1440, but I'd be looking at gtx1070 for gaming at that resolution. Especially for VR.

I'd look at what works best with the Vive (not something I'm upto speed on) in your case seeing as the 780 does you fine other wise and neither of those options will be worse - though obviously if you are going to spend money it would be ideal to get an upgrade at the same time.

Get the gtx1070, it's a much bigger upgrade and with G-Sync i would be sticking with Nvidia. The 1070 is around 40% faster than the 480 at 1080p and around 42% at your resolution of 1440p.

In your case I would opt for a 1070. You have a gsync monitor for when you play non vr games and the frames per second difference is big between the two cards.

The 480 is a great card for around £200 and the 1070 is a great card for £350 or so.

I have had both cards on a 1440p screen but the difference wasn't such a loss due to my monitor having freesync. And I am only using the 480 until vega comes out hoping that there will be a card to rival the 1070.

The 1070 is a fantastic card btw. :)
