Hi

Does this look right for order of performance of ATI cards? If so, where would two 512Mb 4850's in Crossfire fit into the scheme of things?

5890
5870
5850
4890
5770
4870
4850
5750

Looking for the most cost effective upgrade on a 4850

Cheers

lol i wouldnt place it that high, i would estimate it to be slightly better than a 4890 / gtx 275

5850 is way up there in the clouds, but you can try and prove me wrong :p

(2 x 4850 512mb's)

The problem with 2x 512 4850's is twofold. First, their idle power usage is worse on the planet than my car was idling at traffic lights.

And in game, as soon as any app requires more than 512mb of gfx memory, performance will nose bomb to single figures - if you are lucky. Those reviews are all well and good, but they are all on dated single player titles where mem usage is well planned. Want to be using a 2x512mb setup on an mmo next year with 100 players on screen, at the same time as full aa, tripple buffer and 1200p res? No chance.

wow, COD has some terrible crossfire scaling there :| I would rate the 4850 CF just below the 5850 on a well scaled game :)

That's odd, other reviews put the scaling on CoD4 at nearly 100%.

edit:

5890
5870
5850
4850 Xfire
4890
5770
4870
4850
5750

That would be my estimate, assuming scaling of about 60-65%.

im running 2 4850s (512) atm and thgeir fine, however my main concern is the idle temperature, very very hot. mine average from 70-80* and ingame it normaly reaches 5/10+ at 90% load.
but im happy with them but will upgarde to 5850 next year or fermi.

That shows over 100% scaling in COD4.... I take back what I said.... bad original review :) CF 4850s can get better framerate than a 5850 given the right game, but can also score pretty badly with a bad game

wow, are you doing anything with fan speed? mine idle at around 30-40C with fan speed also about 30-40% ;) amusingly the also get to about 60-70C with 100% load and fan speed of around 60% :D
