4850 oc vs 4870 oc

there are a bunch of options there that I dont have :/ I am only running the demo
Some of these settins put my GFX on its knee's, so it makes a difference.

I guess I can run the demo (for consistancy), I will download it, but have included what I have run so far.

Also with my version I have to be logged into relic online too, so that might not help.

yes i got massively higher results than you so obviously the demo is toned down graphically.

Grab a screeny of your COH graphical settings please.
I am downloading now, but only 500K at this time of day for me, so will be 30mins or so more.
Also what driver do you currently have ?

i'm running the 8.6 hotfix drivers

I have done a fair bit of searching, but I am not the least bit sure of the overclocking potential of these cards.

From the couple of OC attempts on a couple of reviews, the 4850 is looking like its a poor clocker. Is this the case generally? Without volt mods and BIOS flashes, what seems to be an achievable OC for the 4850's.

Same for the 4870's. Whats an average expected OC without modding the cards?

Still looking forward to the like for like comparisons you guys are doing in here.

Sounds very similar setup to 3850 and 70.

there was not a big difference between 3850 512 and 3870 512 so if the difference is the same with 4850 and 4870 it makes the 4850 better value in my book especially if overclocked and with a decent cooler

I agree, the HD4850 does appear be better value, but the HD4870 is better!

There is a part of me that says buy the HD4850 but the GDDR5 on the HD4870 running at an effective 3600MHz just says "Buy me! Buy Me!"

I kinda wish I could follow the path of Gurusan and get the cheaper, better value GPU and mod it, clock it etc but I don't have that level of purchasing discipline at this stage in my life!

I still have a tiny Nagging going through my mind about purchasing the HD4870 due to its higher power requirements and needing two PCI-E power plugs. . .

Oh well I'm sure I will master my puchases at some stage, but for now lets all enjoy! :)

well the memory is underclocked from factory as such.
The cores on 4850/4870 are the same, no one is sure if they are speed-binned, but i would doubt it.
The 4850 will should/will great results in % performance increases for faster memory overlocks as the core on those is bandwidth starved.

In ATI's Overdrive (within the drivers) the maximum clocks available for my 4870 are 750/1100 (4400mhz effective).
This is still with the cards fan at the silly low 16%.

I would imagine that 800/1200 would be easy, and ill a little run at that if possible with COH later.

Well I just reran my test with the memory clocked a bit more. 22% increase in bandwidth resulted in a 5.6% increase in average framerate.

Struggling to get an OC tool to work with this card.
ANyone know one as so far powerstrip does nothing , OCtray reboots system ??

Posted my results for the demo version. (post #40)

Ah, thanks

So when OCed to levels similar to 4870, it actually performs quite close to the 4870. If I am reading things right.

Now just to see how well the 4850's OC on average, with just the one power connector... and without modifications.
