4850 overheating?

I havnt recently played much demanding games, but today i've played crysis and cd4(ok not that demanding) and twice i've had the program close down and tell me that the card is overheating.. (above 80C).. my card is the asus eah4850 and is not overclocked at all.. I've had problems with the smart doctor software before, and havnt relally payed much attention to it, but since it claims its overheatign during normal play what do you recon i should do? - I have a Nzxt Hush, and a external blower right beneath the card so i cant see how else the temps could be caused other than a bad card?

have you manually set the fan speed in CCC, if not set it to 70% (yes it might make a racket) and see if that helps, if so then either do this each time you play games (you can set up multiple profiles - one for desktop one for gaming) or if you dont like the noise invest in an aftermarket cooler

Although it's hot and may shorten the life of it long term, it shouldn't* (don't hold me on this) be that damaging. My 8800gt used to (before an aftermarket cooler) go up to ~95c. And the 4850 is a hot chip, many of them go that high. Any way you can turn the auto closing program thing? Or are you uncomfortable with it being 80c?
If so, if manually setting the fan speed doesn't help, i suggest getting an aftermarket cooler. Can reduce load temps a lot. Mine went down by ~25c. (Using the Accelero Twin Cooler)

Ok i've adjusted the auto smart thingy and even with the fan runnning on 100% past 70C it still overheats in call of duty 4. Considering this will reduce the long term lifespan of the card, and the asus software tells me the card is overheating, just with normal gameplay, then surely i should be able to send the card back under the fact that according to the asus software it is malfunctioning.- I'm not going to get an aftermarket cooler, mainly because i never intend to overclock the card so i'd just be voiding the warranty to enable the card to perform how it should perform

Unless your ambient temp is unusually high then >80C seems iffy with the card at stock. Overclocked i never went past mid 70's on my previous 4850, it's replacement runs a few Degrees higher while overclocking it right now but still not at the temps you're getting at stock. What's your idle temp?

Is the Asus card the one with the Glaciator heatsink? If it is the temps definately shouldn't go that high.

Just wondering about your exhaust blower. Is it directly in the next slot next to the card and is it extracting air from the case and blowing it out? Could be that its taking air away from the card.

I have the EAH edition, so its just the bog standard slim cooler. The exhaust blower is in the 2nd slot down from the graphics card, and when you feel the airflow coming out from it its always been very warm, so i would presume this would be a help not a hinderance. Also since its a hush i have 2 120mm fans, one in the fron and one in the back. My ambient temperature at the moment of my room is 24C, so not warm by any means. Speedfan reads my system to be at 36C, and the temperature of the card is hanging around 55C (and the fan is spinnign at 60%)

No those temps are fine for teh single slot cooler just increase the tolerance's on the software thats telling you its too hot, i dout its the core hitting that its more likly to be the memory.

Either way these cards are fun up to 100ish deg under load so ATI tell us.

The single slot on default settings would have temps going up to 100C. Are there any noticeable effects on games like artifacts or is it specifically just the asus software saying its overheating?

Saying that I used to have a single slot 4850 and once I manually set the fan to max temps hovered around 80C under load which was fine. If you want to RMA though do so.

I,m using a OC Sapphire ati 4850 (stock cooler) my fan's set at 30% idle and 100% when under full load temps about 90c but my living room has warmed up because of the warmer weather, just gamed all night(B/field 2142) LOL 8.00pm till 7.30am approx, no problems at all and it was very hot last night, using latest cat's 9.5.
