hi ,

dunno if its already been posted or not.

just a quick post, is there going to be a GDDR5 1024mb version of the 4870?
i cant seem to find any rock solid details about it.
just wondering if anyone can confirm.

many thanks

The 1GB version of the 4850 was a couple of weeks behind, so I would expect the 4870 to be the same.

Although the 4870 1GB version should be very interesting.

is this a proper ATI design? or is it like the 8800gt 1gb that did nothing
The 1GB 4870 is a proper design. People on the tech section of the Age Of Conan forums keep saying it'll be out on the 8th of next month, but I have no idea what their source is unfortunately.

They're probably going by this:

(source: http://anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=3338)

Although that's just the predicted date of mass availability for the reference cards, although it wouldn't surprise me if there were a few 1GB models floating around then.

Edit: What's also interesting about that slide - since the GTX+ will be coming out on the 16th and the 9800 GTX prices will be falling like rocks, AMD claims the 4870 is the 9800 GTX's price competitor so there might be a chance of them dropping the 4870 to compete with it and the 4850 to better compete with the 8800 GT. Sounds fun.

They both have the same memory interface don't they?

The only reason the 8800GT 1024mb did "nothing" was because not many things use more than 512MB at 'normal' resolutions, thats why.

It'll only really come into play at silly resolutions with AA to be honest.

Hmm im considering waiting for 1 gig version as i game at 1920x1200. Is that considered a silly resolution ? :p or will i be ok with the 512mb cards

Which is wrong now, as RV770 XT is the GT200 Competitor, the R700 will be in a different league. :D

I'm pretty sure the table implies the competition for the price bracket, not the performance bracket, I'm just wondering as to whether or not they're planning on sticking to that competitive price plan once the GTX+ hits.

No hes saying that the rv770 is a 4870 no matter what amount of memory it has. The r700 is the 4870x2. I think with the gddr5 the 4870 512 is handing the higher resolutions pretty easy in most games with its high bandwidth.
