4870, 1024mb verion??

So you saying there isnt going to be a 1GB 4870? Only the 4870x2?

You can bet a 1gig version will arrive for the 4870XT

And proberly an 4870X2 1gig card for August as rumours suggest.

If anything the benchmarks seem to show 512meg card is handeled very well @ 1920x1200..... but none the less would be interesting to see if the 1gig version prooves its better, our 24" TFTs deserve some fun.

Only thing im considering is if one can bag 2x4870s for £360 quid might it not be better to wait for till August for the 4870X2.......That card will surely end any requirement to upgrade for a very long time:)

There will be a 1GB 4870 card, even if it's not any better than the 512MB model. The 4870, like the 3850, 3870, 8800 GT, etc. is a reasonably open design which means AIB's can do quite a lot with the design, i.e. better heatsinks, more memory, etc.

Hmm im considering waiting for 1 gig version as i game at 1920x1200. Is that considered a silly resolution ? :p or will i be ok with the 512mb cards

Wait for 1GB. 512MB isn't enough for 1920x1200 with AA + AF.

Check out my comparison between 512MB and a 1GB card here. Games also load quicker with 1GB VRAM, and you get a smoother overall experience.

They're NV cards but the same still applies.

It's actually not the same. Ati 512MB cards seem to be equivalent to NV's 1GB when it comes to VRAM usage.

I'm really not sure what card I want/need. I'm on a CRT, so my resolution is flexible, but ideally I want to play at 100Hz with V-Sync on and plenty of eye candy...

i've been following the 4870s release date, however i havent followed the spec of the card that closely, mainly due to that NDA, but can the 4870 actually make use of 1GB of VRAM?

What, they magically use less? Magically double their amount? VRAM is VRAM... you have however much you have, and if you run out... you run out.

I believe AA uses more memory on Nvidia cards than ATI's for one.

Anyhow explain how ATI can give out similar frame rates at the same resolutions with less RAM otherwise :p

When is the X2 due? With that new technology between the 2 cores, I bet it will be an absolute brute of a card. ATi have done the right thing in keep quiet and not giving much away :)
