4870 1gb random crashes

Read lots about this on earlier drivers but I'm on the 8.12's and every single game just exits at a random point in time no error message is given the games just shut down.

Example - playing L4D tonight one game lasted 5 mins before it crashed, the next last about an hour..

Card is not overclocked at all everything was fine on my 4850 until I put this in today. Ive looked at flashing the card to a new bios but it scares me to be honest and I don't really know what I'm doing.

Any suggestions?

flashing the bios isnt actually that bad (speaking as someone who was pretty scared of doing it)

people gave me some great advice on creating a bootable usb key and the step by step for booting and flashing in dos.

obvisouly dont use the 4870 bios but eveything i needed was in the links in those threads.
