hi all im sorry if this has been asked before but i cant find a answer

as Xmas is comming i have some money to spend, will adding a second 4870 to my system increase perfomance a lot?

My Resolution is 1680 by 1050

he didnt ask if its worth it, he asked will it be a big performance increase.

the answer to that question is it depends on how well the game is optimised for crossfire, a badly optimised game will see little to no increase, and optimised games will see an increase of 50%+

We said it was a waste of time because multi-gpu setups need 1920x1200 or above to be worthwhile. You are not going to see a 50% performance improvement at 1680x1050 because it's too CPU-limited.

err.. how much of a performance increase will he see on a 1680x1050?

Negligeable.

Again, waste of money. He asked he had extra money for Christmas... You honestly going to tell him that it's worthwhile for him to plonk money down the drain?

He is actually right. Take Farcry for instance, it loves crossfire and will almost double your frame rate. Crysis on the other hand = fail and will hardly scale at all.

Utter bobbins.

I've got CF 4850's on 1680x1050 and the performance boost going from 1 to 2 is quite considerable.

As a 4870 is just an OC'd 4850 with some fancy mem i'd imagine the boost would be a bit more than negligeable.

Obviously it is all down to how good the game scales, but 1680 certainly does benefit from Crossfire.

Correct answer, shame it took a while :)

Would 1920 x 1200 see a decent improvment using 4870CF ?

Yes again though it depends on the game and whether CF scales well with it.

This is also the same with SLI.

It should be noted though at this sort of resolution if the cards are 512mb variants CF/SLI will improve the average FPS (by having a higher max FPS) but your minimum FPS will probably not improve at all due to a lack of vmem.
