4870 cheap as chips????

That is what they cost back in July/August before price slowly went up week by week, and then settled around a little over £200.

bit of advice now.

Got the above item in my basket and wanting to hit the buy button but a niggling part of me says NO.

I've always had Nvidia and friends who have had ATI said the performance was great just drivers and the CC was crap.

Can i easily clear out my Nvidia drivers etc and install ATI without having to do a fresh install of Vista?

Also if purchased i'll get a Vortexx Neo to cool the card as reviews says temps are high but how easy are they to fit and are the gum pads good for cooling the ram or are ram synks needed?

The cooler is easy to fit, the tape is fine for the ram.

Use driver sweeper or driver cleaner to remove the old drivers.

The drivers and the CCC are fine.

i suppose it's just the fear of change after being used to Nvidia for so long but @ £*** for a 4870 it's a steal.

And i also like the idea of the fan control profiles which you can set up with ATI. I take it they're easy to do?

cheers Piky01.
i think i may go for the Vortexx and try the fan profiles first.
As long as it's quieter than my 7900 i'm not bothered.

Also i have now hit the purchase button. 2-3 days and counting

magicroundabout. I also fitted a Vortex neo to my 4870. My first graphics cooler upgrade, and it was quite simple. Temps have dropped 20c (although I reckon if I reseated it it would be more) and quite good. The Vortexx uses a 3 pin connection so will not connect to the fan point on the card, so either use a fan controller like Pilky01 does or if ya like me, just use the 4 pin molex connector, on its loudest setting i can't hear it over other parts of my PC (mainly because my antec power supply is a tad too loud)

Hope this helps :)

cheers Carrot. I'm not one to normally mess with graphics cards etc but seeing as temps drop a good 20c this time i will need to.

looking forward to receiving my card next week. i've suffered too long with my 7900 so the world of gaming can now come back as i've been reluctant to buy games until i can play them properly.

also looking forward to seeing what my benches are with the new card. before they were embarrassing

Unfortunately (for OcuK) I often find things cheaper elsewhere. And now with the increased shipping costs, I find myself buying very little from OcUK these days, if anything :(

Not the way I wanted it to go but hey, I'm in the minority

That's a great price for that card, you won't be disappointed :)

i know a lot has happend with the economy etc but back in Jan this year OCUK we're No 1 for cheapness etc but now things have gone full circle!!!

A saving of over £50 was criminal for me not to purchase it.
One thing i will get from OCUK is the Vortexx Neo next payday.

Pleased to see a 1Gb 9800GTX+ I have my eye on has dropped down to ~£*** too. That's about £25 less than a few days ago.

Dead easy to do with RivaTuner (if you want it temperature controlled so that it speeds up/slows down depending on the temp), or you can just go into the CCC and up it to a fixed speed (which is what i do on my 4850 as it works great, i just up it from 30% to 45% when im going to game and it keeps the load temp around 65-70, and i can still hardly hear it). :)

Id remove the competitor price though, as the quoting of them is not allowed, but id grab it at that price, be daft not to imo, absolute steal that. :D

i've already purchased it and should arrive Mon/Tues.
the temp control in RivaTuner is exactly what i want. I'd get annoyed having to go into CCC to change it. My patients aren't the best

Erm, surely you should be getting free shipping from OcUK?

The free shipping (and next day too) for loyal forum members has meant a welcome return to shopping at OcUK for me. :)
