hi all just want some advice on a cooler for my 4870 or maybe both of them, ok i have a powercoler one which is in my main pc, if i let the card do its own thing it idles at 84 deg, and crashes in games, if i leave it on 100% idles at 50 degs and gets to about 84 in games, but is very noisy at 100%
i also have a gigabyte one in my spare pc which i dont use for games, i did have these in cf but the gigabyte one dosent allow me to change the fan speed and gets too hot to use in cf and crashes the pc,

so can anyone reccomend a good cooler for either of these, or if the price is cheap enough i might change both and have cf again, cheers in advance.

was looking at that cooler earlier, has good reviews but is a lot cheaper than all the others, am a bit wary if its any good due to its price compared to alternatives.

What brand is your 4870? Ive just recently installed the same cooler onto my XFX 4870 and had no problems fitting it at all. I know some people, depending on the brand of card, have had problems with installing one.

EDIT: Was just doing a test through furmark and averaged around 66c on load.

I have a HIS branded 4870 and I'm using a "Accelero Twin Turbo Pro VGA cooler" with it. Max trempreture on load I've had is 53'C. A marked improvement to the stock cooler which was terrible and used to get 90-95'c under load. Unfortunately I don't think OCUK sell this cooler.

Doesn't that have terrible VRM cooling? Or am I thinking of something else?

VRM cooling on 4870/90 = serious buisness.

I have a 4870 Toxic Vapor X and the core barely tops 55... But the VRMs easily get to 80-90! 0_o (only a small heatsink on them...)

Vortexx Neo is cheap and cheerful - a 5ºC reduction in load temperature and 16ºC reduction in idle temperature for less than £12 is serious bang for your buck.

I read a review where it said that the fan shroud has small notches to allow some air to be directed on to the VRMs. I dont think it will let you overclock your GPU much over the standard cooler. The main reason I am getting it is to reduce the noise as it is the loudest part of my PC atm.

well i have 2 a powercolor and a gigabyte, was hoping to get a better card soon anyway so might get this till i get my payout in 3 weeks and just get a 5850

I have 2 Sapphire 4870 1gb's with Vortexx Neo's on them, they had VRM headsinks on from the old Sapphire coolers. Best thing about it is the hot air goes out of my case. You can buy Zalman heatsinks for the VRM's (google it). I have had no probs with temps so far. @ 100% they are a lot quieter than the Sapphire coolers were.

ok well i bought the akasa cooler, made a big difference, as my card had to be on 100% fan to get below 50 idle, and this is on full fan but is one hell of a lot quieter, and idles at 45, just been playing a game for a while and temp didnt go above 60 whereas the old one used to get up to 80-90 and even crash ocasionally.
