Hi, first up I'd just like to say hi to everyone as I'm new here (been shopping at OcUK for years just never visited the forums).

Now the pleasantries are done with I can get onto my issue.

I currently game at a resolution of 1440x900 with a 4870 (512), q6600 @ 3.4 and 4gb memory but I've just ordered a 24" monitor with a 1980x1200 resolution.

So:
1) What sort of performance hit can I expect to see in game?
2) I usually set AA to about x4 or x8, what is acceptable to turn it down to at this new resolution?
3) Is there a rough way of calculating performance loss based on number of pixels being rendered or is it vastly different for each game/card?

Thanks for any help you guys can provide.

M8, I`d say don`t worry about it. Run it the same, if you feel slowdown then knock the AA down and suck it and see then.

Re 3) I don`t know :)

You'll be finally using your card to its full potential at 19x1200,of course there will be a performance hit,but only a handful of games will push the 4870 at that res.

Most of the time you'll be maxing settings with plenty of AA,Crysis and Warhead will run well at high, but with limited or no AA,Far Cry 2 is apparently quite hungry but not having played it I can't be too specific.

I wouldn't get too hung up on calculating performance loss, your card is ideal for high res/high detail gaming, and as mentioned only 1 or 2 games will really test it at that res.

Thanks very much guys, this is pretty much what I had hoped/expected.

I'm mainly playing Left 4 dead and Fallout 3 nowadays and both Bethesda and Valve are usually pretty good with their graphical scaling (my better half runs Tf2 on an old P4 and nVidia 5 series, and for some reason wont let me upgrade it for her despite numerous offers).

Left 4 dead and Fallout 3 will be fine at 1980 x 1200. You "might" struggle a bit with Crysis. I have the same card but the 1GB version and get a constant 30FPS on Gamer settings at 1980 x 1200. The only game I have problems with, and this is insane..is COD4. I cannot run it fully maxed out at 1980 x 1200. I have to drop it back to 1600 x 1200 to have it playable. Apart from COD4 and Crysis (in a way), it'll eat every other game alive at 1980 x 1200. You have nothing to worry about.

Crysis and Far Cry 2 are the only games that benefit from my 4870X2 @ 1920x1200, so a standard 4870 will be fine for everything else on the market I think.

As helpful as you've all been I'm afraid I wont be gaming at this res anytime soon. The courier (for some reason that I can't quite figure out) has delivered the monitor to an address I lived at some years ago instead of the one I've been getting all my deliveries to for years.

Alas there seems to be no way for me to reclaim it unless the current owners have any shred of decency.

How did that happen, take it you didn't order from ocuk then?

I'd go & give them a knock if your local

Fingers crossed

No, I'd already ordered from a local(ish) store. Went round to the old address today but there was nobody in, the place looked like a squat too (living there was a low point in my life). I bet the monitor is already sat in cash converters somewhere.

Sad times.
