was wondering if any one knew how to get the sound to work on my 4870 iv got it rigged up to my 32 inch lcd tv but cannot get the sound to work do i need a separate cable any help would be great

you want to get sound through a graphics card is that even possible? i have the 4870 and there is only DVI ports on the card!

Are you using the DVI>HDMI connection on the right socket (IIRC only one of the connections on the back of the card does the sound), and have you told the playback software to use the HDMI audio?

Windows Vista (and possibly XP) can remember what you've got each program set to use, but will default them all to the "default" windows sound device (usually soundcard), so you need to change the setting for every programme you want to use the HDMI audio to do so before it will (if that makes sense).

So for example you will want to tell ZoomPlayer and WinDVD/PowerDVD to use the HDMI audio if you want them to output the sound via the videocards HDMI connection (but other programmes will still use your normal soundcard).

I hope that helps a bi :)

i dont know much about audio stuff especially through gfx cards but i do remember reading this maybe something on here is what your trying to do?

Make sure the connection from the graphics card to the LCD is done by using the supplied DVI-to-HDMI adapter that came with the card, and obviously also with a HDMI cable.

Assuming all the drivers are correctly installed, go into the Sound and Audio Devices area in the Control Panel in Windows, and then change the default sound device to the ATi HD one (Note that this is for Windows XP, otherwise Vista would be different but still easy to see). Test it by playing the Windows sound effects or something to see if you hear anything coming out from the LCD TV's speakers.

If this works, make sure that any Media Player programs have selected the ATi HD sound option too.

sound

still nothing m8 i was reading somewere that u need another cable from the video card ill keep trying thank you for your time and patience m8 ,much appreciated

Well thats strange. Are you sure you are using the right connections?

DVI-to-HDMI adaptor connected onto one of the DVI ports (Switch between the left or right one just to check) at the back of the graphics card, then a HDMI cable from that adaptor into the HDMI port of the LCD TV?

I mean you don't really need any other cable unless you want to directly use your motherboard's onboard sound or a PCI/PCIE soundcard. ATi cards from the 2XXX, 3XXX and 4XXX series comes with its own sound onboard the card, and once all the drivers and connections are properly installed, all you need to do is change to it and it should work.
