thinking ahead a little if i picked one up now would i see much improvement over my 512mb 4870 using DX 9 (still on xp ya see) then when i upgrade system get another 5770 and jump to Windows 7

or just get another 4870 512mb

I'd say no because both cards would be heavily bottlenecked by your CPU and ram so I'd turn my attentions to those first.

IMO you'll see much more performance improvment spending the same money on a cheap C2D/I5/Phenom II upgrade.

*EDIT* if you plan to upgrade your system anyway then it depends what resolution your gaming at?

o hsorry i already know that
i'm just saying when i upgrade i'll be thinking about gpu's again
i'll be going i7 920 do,win 7 but don't know wether to hold out with a couple of 4870's or sell this on and my rig in sig to get something. but i'll be buying another system before i sell my current one so what ever this makes on the bay of e thats the budget i'll have for a new card plus the sale of the 4870 if u get what i mean.

There'd be a much bigger gain from the second 4870.
The downside being no DX11 + a lot more power usage.

What's the system to be used for? If it's gaming then why not go for i5 and pump the savings (~£150) into a sexier GFX card.

If it's not for gaming then go for the 5770 and save on the electricity bills :)

I5 dosen't support 16x16 gaming only 8x8 so that why i want i7 along with the fact i do a lot of photoshop work and have multiple high resolution photos open at any one time. This rig is showing it's age now :(

I think he means the money you would save from going i5, you could spend on a much better single GPU option.

for example with around £100 less spent on CPU/mobo/ram you could go for a 5850.
