4870 x2 Graphics problem (Shadows)

The reason I know the card is not a dud is because most if not all other x2 owners are experiencing the same thing. The responses I have been given so far on other forums is "Live with it".

Just installed 280 again, everything up and running including mega overclock and stabilty test rock solid, total time - 6 minutes.

Well the only time i played grid was when i got it with my x2 and using the drivers i never experienced what you're showing on the screenshot.

You wern't looking hard enough :p

Anyway its over now, i didn't just go back to my 280 just because of grid. Here is a list of the problems / anoyances I experienced with my x2 (random order):

- Stuttering in games (e.g. reporting 60fps but feels like 20fps)
- Drivers issues (Took me around 3/4 hours just to get a driver working properly)
- Game hotfixes (E.g. Far cry 2) required to be install.
- Newer drivers not having fixes from previous drivers.
- Flickering / tearing in all games
- Overclocking issues, mostly because of CCC.
- Cores not "clocking up" correctly
- Very poor overclocking ability / stabilty
- 2nd core not functioning properly in some games
- Fan profile problems
- Extreme noise from fan at 100%
- Heat levels reaching scary level (90-100c)
- CPU temp affected because of the GPU temp at high load.
- Wierd screen flashes just after any game has loaded
- Random fps drops down to 0fps while fan speed changing
- Artifacts randomly appearing in games with stock clocks
- Shadows flickering and appearing distored in most games (see above)
- Overall texture quality in games poor
- Overall CPU performance decrease with card installed. (wprime / 3dmark cpu scores lower)
- Irregular fps in games. Fps "jumping" (e.g from 340fps to 40fps in CoD4)
- Weird clicking noises aparant after exiting menu's in most games.

Thats all I can think of atm.

A lot of that stuff you posted is common knowledge which you should have known or at least looked up before buying it. Also a lot of it seems indicitive of a card that was overheating.

Well although I currently have a flawless 4870X2, I must admit ATi cards do play up a LOT more than Nvidia ones.

Went from two 3870s to an 8800GTS 512 earlier in the year and it was like a breath of fresh air.

And you could find people saying nvidia cards play up much more than ati cards. Saying it either way is pointless because experiences differ.

Some people seem to think because they get problems everyone else with the same card must.

Anyways I've got none of these IQ problems boogle has and I would notice them if I had what was in those screen shots.

Glad I only have a single 4870 seems the X2 have more problems tho than they are worth at the moment although plenty of people seem happy with the X2.

What one is that? At the minute ive only the demo installed. Full version disc is floating around some place.

Had my X2 for just over a week now and so far i have not had any problems whatsoever and trust me if i had i wouldn't say otherwise. Being honest i also find it funny the amount of people that say they have bought an X2 and also happen to have 280's knocking about i have seen it a few times now and always the same story that the Ati card was a pos and how lucky they are to have an nvidia card to fall back on.

Reasons why maybe i am not getting any issues i have a well ventilated pc that stays and keeps my components nice and cool. I have a psu that is enough for the power an X2 needs and my pc has no other issues at all. As for the comment from someone that people never say anything when there is something wrong with their Ati card thats complete bs when you pay the sort of money an X2 costs if it doesn't work flawlessly you complain and if not resolved you send it back you don't hold onto it because it's a whatever brand so therefore you accpet crappy performance.

All this brand junk makes me laugh it really does as people get so loyal to a company that doesn't know you exist and couldn't care less about you after getting your money hardly something to be loyal too. Rest assured if my X2 ever starts having problems everyone on this forum will know about it and know what my opinion of it is.

But so far it has been an excellent card giving me all the performance i hoped i would get and playing everything smooth and stable. I am not going to say you should try a replacement because i don't think you really wanted an X2 to be any good hence holding on to your 280 but as always just my opinion.

I'm not being loyal to nvidia neither, im just going for what I know now to be the better card.

Better as in slower? I'm confused.

I moved from Nvidia to my 4870x2 and couldn't be happier. Nvidia cards have their quirks too, you just get used to them after a while.

ATI cards have slightly different quirks so as everyone makes the switch you get forums full off whingers moaning that things are different.

I've never had the shadow issues you mention and I've also never had to set the fan to 100%, and I'm not sure why you would want to.

Funny, not saying which is best etc and all that crap but you put the 'better' card down to benchmarks like every other Tom, Dick and Harry in here. The 'best' card for my new system will be the most stable, trouble free consistent performance for the money. Still not decided but if people are having problems they are having problems and I appreciate them posting them for me to look at.

Conspiracy.... Yes every person who posts a problem about the X2 goes through the trooble and expense of buying a 280GTX before hand just to return the X2. Please....

If there is problems, there is problems... Doesn't matter how many times you post 'well mine is fine, so learn to build PCs'. I will look at the law of averages to help me make my decision.

Which for me is my magical x2 (seeing as everyone else in the known universe has had their homes burnt down by that dastardly ATI 48x0 range).

It still amazes me that some cannot grasp the notion that people only make noise when they have something to moan about. How many here moved to a ATI card this summer? I would wager quite a lot, and most of those would be coming from a background of using NV cards for at least the past couple of years. (Seeing as ATI cards were exceedingly rubbish during that time).

Now I actually do have good reason to have a moan. My £1600 laptop was out of order for 2 weeks while Apple replaced the GPU which cooked itself due to a huge design flaw, and the last NV card I bought stopped spinning the fan when it got hot! (luckily I had my trusty X1900XT to fall back on winky.gif)
