4870X2 > 5970

Yup, made the switch last week.

Games defintely run smoother and have upped the AA, and detail levels on everything and it all runs very smoothly on a 5760*1200 resolution over 3 monitors.

If your running 1920*1200 or less, then I don't think it would be worth un upgrade as I never found anything that the 4870X2 struggled with at that res.

Also the card is much bigger, so you have to have a case to take it.

Think I got a 4k increase in 3dMark Vantage with the move.

I think Im going to wait for the next generation to upgrade my 4870X2

How much bigger is the card? The X2 only just fits my case as it is!

Here's a picture of the two of them next to each other before I put the 5970 in the PC.

As you can see, quite a size difference, so if it's a tight fit witha 4870X2, you've no chance with the 5970.

I changed my case from a Antec 900 to a Corsair 800D to fit this beast.

Surely they cant just keep making the cards longer and longer.

We're going to need HUGE cases to fit them in

I made the switch from 2 X 4870X2's Quadfired to the 5970 on 3 24" Dells. 5760X1200 is simply stunning! Take a look on Youtube for some examples. I noticed a big smoothness increase with this card - It really does snigger at anything you throw at it. I only have 1 problem with flickering in desktop when loading web pages etc. But that should be fixed in the next driver hopefully.

I predict 4870x2's will be pretty saught after cards soon, nobody has stock, and a 4870X2 is the perfect 1 screen card.

I'd say: If your only sticking with 1 screen then don't bother with any of the 5000 series cards - It just aint worth it. Not even for DX11 mefinks. On the other hand if you can shell out for another 2 monitors then go for it. Eyefinity is the way forward

Nice setup, although the left monitor is slightly too low. My OCD could never deal with that. :D

Hi Durzel,

Agree, left monitor is 4mm lower, right is 1mm lower. Though the mounting plates on the wall is perfectly in line if I put a spirit level across the top.

I think the tolerences in the making of the wall mounts isn't as good as I'd like.

I'm going to play with a few washers and screws this weekend to see if I can improve the line up.

It did bother me for the first day, but once I'd started using them in anger playing games etc, I soon found I'd forgotten all about it.

Main complaint at the moment is the bezel mamagement that's lacking in the 10.2 ATI drivers, but downloaded BEta 10.3 last night so may give them a try tonight.

Call dibs on OP's 4870x2

You can call dibs on one of the 2 Sapphire 4870X2's i have. Immaculate, complete, boxed. Rarely ever used due to me working away. Year old, probably used 30 weekends since new, smoke free home cards are immaculate, never overclocked cos they don't need it.

Name your prices :)

One would be £190 delivered. No offers. £435 from here last year. Again, the best you'll get in the second hand market by far. Still boxed with 3d mark vantage, ruby rom and all other disks (i forget the others) and components that came with it - I used nothing at all from the boxes apart from 1 crossfire bridge so all is still sealed new. I can provide photos if needed, but that would have to be tomorrow now
