4870X2 and 8.12 won't keep resolution after reboot issue

Hi All,

Hoping someone can help me with a current issue I'm having with my 4870X2 and the 8.12 drivers.

I have a two screen set up 24inch(1920*1200) * 19inch(1280*1024), screens running in extended desktop mode.

The problem I'm having is that after I set these resolutions via either CCC or Windows Personlise if I reboot the PC the resolution changes back to 800* 600 on both monitors with the displays then going back into clone mode.

These drivers were working fine for about 3 weeks after they installed, but seem to have started playing up about a week ago, possibly after a windows update.

OS is Vista Ultimate 64

Any help in resolving this issue would be appreciated as I'm getting fed up having to reset the resolution every time I boot the PC.

I'm having a similar issue with my 8800GTX using the latest official nvidia drivers 180.42 (i think, at work atm), where i've got a hazro 24" (1920x1200 native res) and a 19" LCD (1280x1024 native res), both connected via DVI cables.

Basically, at every bootup, my 19" is fine, but the 24" always reverts back to 1920x1080, no matter what i do, and the 1920x1200 resolution is not available to select in options, i have to re-test and apply the custom resolution in order to get the correct res back. I think it may be that there the drivers fro my 24" monitor are the default plug n play ones in windows, where "proper" drivers for it would leave the resolution available. In fact I think there was an issue with the 30" hazro monitors, which they released a driver fix for.

The odd thing is, a while ago i had fixed it, simply by messing around with the resolutions and rebooting over n over until it "stuck".. but after i moved my pc and plugged the monitor cables in the other way around, everything seems to have broken.

Sorry to hijack your thread, but it sounds very similar to my issue. Although I am using WinXP 32bit.

edit: one other thing worth mentioning: If I set it to a single monitor, and select the 24", the correct resolutions are available to select, and everything remains as it should after a reboot... so maybe this is entirely related to the way windows treats dual screen desktops (ie 2 independent desktops rather than a stretch across 2 monitors, nvidia terms it twinview)

Sorry should've mentioned I've tried swapping mine around physically as well.. as well as a full reinstall of drivers.. upgraded to newest ones, tried older ones etc etc. To be honest I'm not sure theres much I haven't tried.

I did see one thing on another forum about physically editing the .inf files for the drivers to include the monitor resolutions you require in the first few resolutions detailed inside, however I'm not quite sure where in the .inf this needs doing as there are several sections containing resolutions. I assume the idea is similar for ATI drivers.
 
Try some 3rd party resolution forcing software.. I had a similar issue a few yrs back with the drivers not keeping the refresh rate upon reboot.. Sorry i can't remember the name, and i know that's not much help, but there will be some 3rd party resolution forcing software out there.. Personally I'd reformat first of all before trying anything else.
 
I'm sure something like rivatuner would do that, may give that a try.. i'm kinda reluctant to reformat as I'm not convinced it will fix the problem.. I'll do that as a last resort. If I do find a definitive solution i'll make sure i post on here just in case it helps someone else :)
