4870x2 dead?

It's because the heat can re-flow any solder that's come away from the PCB. Glad to hear you got it working.

any time I see a used graphics card on that auction site which seems to be a good deal I send a message to the seller asking 'was it baked?'

answer is always yes :(

Indeed. I used to get some really nice bargains on ebay whenever a new card comes out and the rich kids dump their last gen to keep up.

Now I don't bother as its too much of a lottery with all the baking and cooking. Problem is that it can take a few months before the symptoms appear so paypal protection is often no longer valid ...

Sorry to bump an old thread and all but I bought a dead 8800GTS on a popular auction site for £3.20 and went and picked it up as it was in the next town xD

Just baked it. Waiting to try it out.

*edit* it works! :D

I had a 4870x2 and have baked it about 6 times! As this was in my studio PC and I needed it for work I got really tired of doing this trick. I decided to go for a EVGA GTX 670 FTW as its replacement and I'm so glad I did! Skyrim HD2K on max settings is awesome and I have CUDA for video editing too.

I will constantly bake the 8800GTS until it will work no more! xD The only issue would be slowly running out of thermal paste.

The 8800GTS is only for my el cheapo second system for LAN.

Can you bake old PSU's too? :p

In theory, though I strongly advise against it :p

Or at least against using it afterwards  Next time I get a dead PSU I will cook it, and hook it up to a some worthless hardware outside connected to an extension cord and a two way surge protector, and let you know ;)

I do things like this when I get bored... Expect footage if something explodes xD I predict nothing will happen, or it will power on normally... nothing interesting I suspect :L
