4870x2 killing my computer?

Prior to getting my 4870x2 I emailed OCZ to say that I was looking at getting a new card which would need an 8pin connector and asked if they would send me a adapter as I thought my PSU would cope with the x2.

The reply I got simply had a link to their shop where I could buy one. No comment or "I'm sorry we can't send you one because we're meanies, but you can buy one here...". Just the link.
Last time I ask them for anything methinks (or give them any of my pennies).

Fortunately the 4870x2 I bought came with a 6pin-8pin adapter so I've been using that.

Just ordered a shiny Corsair 750W TX which I should receive on Wednesday, and *fingers crossed* no more artifacts or random reboots.

Thanks again for all the help and advice.

Tagan is junk ? weird i must be lucky then as ive always had tagan and never had a problem with them, never missed a beat.

Obviously for many any reasonable brand will be fine, but they are not well built, and have a high fail rate.

Junk is too strong, but they're not great and expensive for a lower quality OEM. But they look flashy which attracts many i guess!

;)

Well on the grounds that pcp&c are now owned by ocz one would hope that their, ocz, psu's use some of the pcp&c knowledge. I have used several ocz psu's and never had any problems. I haven't tried multiple gfx cards though i must admit.

If all else fails get a psu with a BIG single 12v rail as multiple 12v rails is whats possibly causing your problems if it is a psu issue, not that the psu is naff.

OCZ StealthStream 600w runs 2 4850's in crossfire, 3 Sata HDD's, 2 DVD-RW's, Q6600 @ 3.6GHz, 4x1Gb Ram, 5 system fans. No resets for the 1 month I've had it.

Any difference between StealthxStream and ModStream? Cus I would have thought a 780w OCZ would run a 4870x2 fine considering what I'm running

Bit of an update regarding my issue.

Received my Corsair 750W TX PSU on Wednesday. Installed and started testing.

No blue lines. Yay.

However. I was and am still getting artifacts on dark areas. One example is the Steam icon in the System Tray. When I hover over this I get a few sparklies on the icon.

Received my Fallout 3 today, installed and started playing.
The blue lines returned. Again on dark areas.
Then more artifacting.

May well have to reinstall my 8800GTX for the time being, as it's almost unplayable (at the very least INCREDIBLY annoying).

Sad that my 4870x2 isn't working.
Sad that I had to spend £85 to find this out.
Thoroughly regretting trying to upgrade my GTX.

Happy Halloween. :(

Well at least you got a nice PSU, you could run crossfire 4870x2's (I think). But yeah unlucky. good luck on the RMA procedure, hopefully there quick and you can get to experience the performance increase over the 8800 without all the problems.

what make is your 4870x2? is it just a certain make with these similar probs? you know like the HIS x1950 had with its crappy memory.

Sorry to hear that man, just another victim of the shoddy 4870X2.

Go and get a GTX280 instead. They may be faster than the Nv monster, but they are so problematic.

I had a similar thing, turns out my DVI-VGA connector was faulty, changing it sorted it. I had the same symptoms as well - blue dots in dark areas.

Of course you could just have been unlucky, maybe try an RMA? Faulty cards can and do happen. :)

Right, another little update.

Having read Tute's above post regarding DVI cable. I suddenly thought "ooo, maybe it's the DVI switch box I'm using to hook up both my PS3 and PC to my monitor".

So finally I got round to unplugging the box and having the PC connected straight to the monitor.

So far so good!
No blue lines! No artifacting anywhere that I can see! :D

The only downside is that of course I feel a right plank for not trying this earlier, as well as for shelling out £85 on a new PSU :s
The upside to this however is I now have enough spare parts that I've upgraded over this year to build a second gaming machine :D

All in all I blame Tute for not having posted his wisdom earlier :( :p

Thanks again to everyone for their contributions <3

To be honest getting a more powerful PSU was a good idea anyway. I was using my 4870x2 system on a Corsair 620W for a month or so but recently the system stopped booting, unless I restarted about 5-10 times. Replaced the PSU with a 720 Enermax and now all is fine. Dont know if the old PSU was getting worn out or something :P wasnt more than a couple of months old.

Glad to be of help. I was totally stumped as well - until one day I pulled the monitor cable out of the back by accident by stepping on it.

When I plugged it back in the blue dots were gone. They came back after about a day but I then knew what was causing it.

More serious than that though, I also now get random reboots.
No BSOD, just straight into reboot. No errors reported in Event Viewer either.

Is the card dying? - Is it RMA time?

Or is there a simple cause that evades me?

Any help much appreciated.

I have been having the same problem with my HIS 3870x2, doing random reboots :(

After a few months of the problem happening more and more, I tried the graphics card in my friends PC and it started doing the same after about 10 minutes. I just sent my card back to Overclockers yesterday which cost me £20.70  Had email off them today saying it will take 5 to 7 days to test.

So now I have a ATi 1950 256mb in my PC, at lest I’m not getting the random reboots :)
