4870x2 on motherboard that doesn't support crossfire

A friend of mine is thinking of picking up a 4870x2, I think it should work but his motherboard doesn't support crossfire (it's an SLI board), will this work ok?
Also thinking of the cose would this be his best option or is there something better he could go for?
 
it'll be fine

although a 5870 or 470 or 480 would be a better option and if he's using a purely SLI board then he should consider a cpu and mobo upgrade instead
 
A 4870X2 doesn't use crossfire technically speaking, it's all transparent to the PC hardware, the corssfire happens on the graphics board itself. As for whether to get one, it depends on how much he can get it for.

Their performance is good, but if the price isn't then it's not worth it, I'd suggest looking at a 5870 depending on how much this 4870X2 is.
 
Dual GPU'S on one card will work on virtually on any board as the card sorts out the crossfiring or SLI in Nvidia case.
