I bought a 4870x2 a few months back to replace my 4850, which has since just been sitting in my drawer. I was wondering if it's worth chucking it in crossfire mode with the 4870x2, would I see any improvement? I'd need to buy an additional power cable for it, but just wondered what the overall opinion of it was.

Thanks guys.

on a DS4, isn't the second PCIe lane 4x?

If so, the 4850 would be pretty bandwidth bottlenecked.

Iirc, PCIe 4x is the same as full PCI - so anything above a 8600gt/9500gt/x1950 will be bandwidth limited.

Still, I can't see why you haven't just tried it yet :p

Yeah its not worth doing with a PCI-E slot at 4x, and not even worth it due to the memory, as if its a 512mb 4850, then thats what you would only have, as it goes by the card with the lowest amount, so you would lose all the x2's. :)

your 4870 will be throttled to the same speeds as your 4850. would be better if it was a 4870 1gb card. same speeds and same amount of memory ect. ;)

It WILL throttle the 4870s to the speed of the 4850, ive seen benchies from this exact setup when a friend of mine was doing it. Even so the 4x slot will kill the 4850 so its not worth doing just like everyone else said.

Benches does not mean throttled.
We are talking about clocks. the fact that the 4850 will hold back the 4870 in performance terms & that the 4X slots is no good is a different issue to throttling.

The FACTS are that the 4870 will run at its own clocks. unless you can show screen shots of the 4870 clocks dropping to 4850 speeds.

I have 4 older gen 3870 xfired cards & i can run them all at different speeds..

Well Yes ok the clocks remain the same, but performance is what matters in the end surely., the 4870s will perform at the same as a 4850 is what I should have said. I do appologise

Yes performance is what matters & he will basically get only the performance of 2 4850 if you was using a 4850 with a 4870, but the facts should be kept straight in regards to clocks nevertheless.

If i were him i would not bother, it would have to be another 4870 1GB, Oh & that 4X slot means i would not bother even with another 4870 1GB.

I think the word you were looking for is Bottleneck.
