4890 1GIG DDR5 or GTX260?

4890 without a doubt

definately on par with the GTX275 - and in most cases a GTX285 - and even exceeds it if you have a good clocker

Well, yeah, an overclocked 4890 can beat a stock 285, but I'd wager an overclocked 285 will beat an overclocked 4890 too.

Everyone always says "yeah this card is better than this one when you overclock it" without taking into account overclocking the other card.

That said, the 4890 and 275 are pretty much on par, so between the 4890 and 260, the 4890 is a far better choice.

This. I hate that when people make those comments, they often omit to add the "stock" [insert GPU here] comment. OC'ing as you said, goes both ways after all. In any case I agree, the GTX 275 is more suitable competition to the 4890. Whilst the 4890 is better value, if you plan on playing Batman AA (which has been getting rave reviews accords the boards) and want to have those fancy PhysX additions, it might be worth while checking out the GTX 275 over the 4890.

Yeh, dynamic paper ***!

Seriously though, Physx is nothing but a marketing gimmick for Nvidia atm. I'll be happy when something like it can be implemented on all GPUs, but for now, I am not a fan of Physx.

Yeah but even the best 285's cards are crap overclockers, and worst 4890's are pritty good.

Its like this, if you have a middle of the road overcloked 4890 it can play anything as smoothly as a middle of the road 285 for around a £100 less.

The 285 is not even worth considering until price comes down by %45. The 4890 is a much better card, end of story.

exactly - that was my original point put better - the 4890s seem to have on average very good overclocking headroom - especially if you buy an Asus one (which aren't really any more than the others)

I do agree with you that the 4890 is almost always a better choice than the 285, but I just wanted to point out that it almost seemed like he was saying the 4890 performs better than the 285, when in actuality, it doesn't. The 285 is very poor bang-for-buck though, so you are right, it isn't worth considering.

id get the 260 personally. even though the 4890 is the faster card my a small margin.

good drivers, decent quality cooling, and good idle running is enough for me.

physics X is a load of ***, merc 2 even has animated paper, not very good but meh

and thats on havok (can't wait till they do things properly and get it on GPU)

anyways rant over:mad:, back to subject

HD4890, unless for some reason you pefer Nvidia as they are about the same and price now, and in case you want physics.

the GTX285 is quite over priced okay £220 now for a stock one (might not over clock well through, some don't seem to like being clocked)

Basicaly, it's like this.

The 4890 is more powerful than the 260.

The 4890 requires more power than the 260.

The 4890 "may" be louder if left to it's own devices, however with the fan set to ~30% speed you need to be some sort of obsessive who games in complete silence to have an issue with it.

The 4890 is currently at £130, the cheapest 260 is £115, so for £15 you get a card 1 generation up.

If you want the "best" card you want the 4890, it is just more powerful, end of. It's also only £15 more expensive.

Ignore the naysayers who talk about noise and heat, the former is subjective and the latter is completely irrelevant to 90% of people as they replace components way before it could EVER matter anyway, also, cards are designed to run at the temps they run at, would be silly otherwise.

*Sniggers* Can't bear to recommend a card that's quite a bit better than your own? As it is a 4870 1GB is faster than a GTX260 nevermind a 4890.

i have the 4890 toxic vapor X card, and it runs really cool and silent compared to my old HIS 4870 which ran extremely hot and was awfuly loud. 4890 is a fantastic card id get that over the nvidia card.

Yeah that's fine, just that it's generally assumed that "GTX260" means the original card and not the newer one.
