4890 or 5770?

1) It's not necessary
2) These are just the first DX11 cards
3) No different to choosing to play at higher/lower res/detail
4) A little performance hit for the opportunity of DX11
5) 5770 is less power hungry

Your call :)

4890 all the way, runs everything on my rig at 1920x1200 very nicely. And my e8400 is clocked a little slower than yours too.

I have the same confusion. Can't decide which one to go with, and doesn't help bloody OCUK have the two at the same price!!!!! GRRRR!

Thanks for making it such an easy choice OCUK. :p ;)

By the time more mature generations of DX11 cards are out (Reasonable prices too maybe) and games are built from the ground up for DX11 a 4890 will have more than filled a gap i think.

The price difference of the 5770 range and the 4890 range is minimal like you say, Shows how well the 4890 is holding up.

I was in the same predicament. Weither to add another 4890 or sell up and get 5770s.. Waiting on delivery for two 5770s tomorrow.
What swayed it for me was they produce less heat, use less power, are quieter and have dx11 features. Although granted you do have to sacrifice a little bit of performance.
I say if you arent worried about dx11 ( i didnt reliase how little difference there is in screenshots atm) or it being futerproof you may as well stick with the 4890. I got one for sale btw:p Shame i cant use MM

thanks guys, i think i will get the 4890, i was going to get the 5850 but after the price increase and the limited stock i think the 4890 would be a good choice for me at the minute, like you say when the price of the direct x11 cards come down and more games use the features , i will then upgrade.

'm no expert but I'd of thought you would be better off getting a 4890 tbh.

Yes the 5770 has DX11 BUT from what I have seen ,for the first set of games and while drivers are still being smoothed out, you would get better results with the 4890 in dx9-10.1 than you would on the 5770 using DX11.

In Lewdogga's position however, I would have probably opted for the 2 x 5770's due to power consumption.

But with just one card yeah I'd say def 4890 - I had it before my 5870 and it ran everything

What do you think of the performance on upcoming titles like BF Bad Company 2 or Crysis 2 with a 4890 ?

Sorry to say I don't so I'm no help here.

There is a thread on here detailing the benchmarks for Dirt 2 dx9 vs dx11:

This will probably help you mate :)

Yep, Seen that, That's what made me decide it should do for a year until the DX11 line of cards mature.

It fares very well although the 5xxx series cards should pick up with driver optimization, £150 (+) for a 4890 just now wont be too far away from the 5xxx cards when the prices drop ( Next year ? :D )

I wouldn't personally gamble on the higher end 5xxx going down massively in price if thats what you're saying.

Even after they drop I would imagine a 5870 will still cost somewhere near £300. If it was me I would def go for the 4890 at the moment.

Only my humble opinion> :)

No chance of a 59xx next year under £300 then ?

:D

A 4890 looks a solid decision to me mate, Cheers.

What do you think of the performance on upcoming titles like BF Bad Company 2 or Crysis 2 with a 4890 ?

That's what concerned me too. Then I did some googling and looked at all the reviews, articles, release dates of games etc and everything seems to be against me getting a 5770 in terms of trying to get a DX11 card now just to be futureproof while also taking a performance hit in older games. When you consider it's the first batch of DX11 cards by ATI, BF Bad company 2 is coming out in March 2010 (by then there will be better cards anyway) and also if a PS3 can run the game, I'm pretty sure a 4890 will handle it just fine anyway (if one did not want to upgrade to DX11).

Furthermore Crysis 2 release date remains uncertain, sometime in 2010, and we all know how Crysis is with even the best hardware... So I have no concerns about trying to play that with top notch graphics, at least not yet anyway - it's way too early to worry about that now.

So when you add it all up, sure getting a DX11 card now may allow you to play the new DX11 games but by the time the good ones are out you can be sure there are going to far better faster DX11 cards out - which will make this first generation batch of cards by ATI look silly. We don't even know at this point what Nvidia are going to dish out either or how well they will perform.

I think it's silly to start buying the DX11 cards now, when things are too uncertain. I have no problem if people want to do that though (some people just like to have the latest hardware). The only benefits I can see from them are running cooler and having better power consumption. But for me personally, all my research and weighing up, suggests it's best to just wait and see, and to get a cheapish good DX10.1 card for the mean time.

Just my thoughts.

Don't get penned in with the sheep.. I would go for a 4850 tbh. There's not many games that are stretching any older generation of cards let alone todays. You can buy a 4850 for under £90 which will tide you over nicely with minimal outlay until dx11 games start to generate. Which is still a awhile yet.

I have two 4890s and they get 21k on Vantage. They cost me £300 new and that was 3 months ago. I am not worried about BC2 or anything else in the next year. MW2 runs top whack at over 100fps (except smoke - poor ATI)

Never had a 4850 so can't comment there... it does sound like a viable option though.

If, however, you would rather spend what you can for now and get the best available at your budget I'd stick with 4890.

I would never have splashed out full whack for my 5870 I had an opportunity to get it for the same price as a 4890 and went for it.
