alright 4890 arrived , plug it in went to play dead space and it started whistling like a bird...another defective from ati

just to let you know there are others out there (google it) who have the same issue with the 4890's

If its capacitor or coil squeal its not a defect. These things just happen. You could try finding out the offending components and try to cool them down a bit more. Another solution that works is to cover them with lacquer or nail polish.

i used to get a whistle sound when playing a few games on my 4870 mainly when in menus!! very annoying, but its not only ATI cards that have this "capacitor" noise.

I just had to RMA my sapphire 4890 not because of a squeal but because the temperature rose to > 100 degrees when at idle under zero load for no reason. It did this quite frequently so I couldn't leave my pc on.

The fan reported a speed of 55% but the actual RPM was 500 odd so no cooling.

My CPU and MB temps remained the same but the heat built up in the case and I had to resort to card manual fan to cool it down.

Looks like there are still some issues with the 4890's so I'm waiting until the vapor x ones come out to see if they are any better.

Mine squeals only in menus too.

I thought my monitor was on it's way out but it's LCD, I don't really think they make that noise. It really does sound like an old CRT I had.

It seems to be when you have high fps only, as soon as I load a map or start playing it's fine. Must be something to do with frequency and coils?

Yer, my 4870X2 does the same on menus and in game videos. On a scale of 1-Annoying it defainetly hits the bingo!

Tbh even my old 8800GTX did it to an extent but the 48xx series does seem to plagued with this. Just capacitor noise though nothing to worry aboot!

My 4870 does this. I just ignore it, it's not that annoying.

I've had loads of cards that do this anyway.

Hi,
1)turn ON VSYNC ... it will decrease squealing!
2) It is not damage, many of GTX260, GTX280, HD4870 (x2) ... dies squealing!

mine gtx260 was squealing very loud, HD4870, a bit, now I have gtx280, used to hear a lot when play high end games, but now not!

My 4890 squeals when in cutscenes, not so much in menus. I've seen a friend's GTX280 do the same thing though, and I dont spend a lot of time in cutscenes or menus :p

SOLUS, strange... I never had problem with tat, as finished Dead space, and with VSYNC it was very smooth!

I RMA'd mine gtx260, because it was squealing badly,..

I guess so, I RMA'd mine GTX260 just by contacting and said: card produces very loud squealing, so can you please send me RAM code/Number
