4G Technology and Spectrum Auction

Indeed, there are big questions over the backhaul capacity. LTE may have a lot more air interface capacity, but how do you backhaul that from a remote rural location?

Questions from who? Considering their partnership with BT to run backhaul/last mile for LTE why would this be an issue? There's the other really obvious point that they are currently using cities for rollout where they have huge network hubs as well so it would seem lack of capacity on is low on the list of issues.

Am I right in thinking that Orange will be re-branded as EE in the near future then?

I assume 4G to compatible devices outside the 16 test cities is still a little way off too?

Meanwhile the places that genuinely need it are shafted as per.

This

3g is faster than our current landline. I can get 3 3g in upstairs bedroom but not quite viable as a broadband as it's 1 bar at best.

4g is something that could really benefit the countryside yet it starts with London et al who already have fibre and good 3g.
Betting it will be years till it gets here.

I suppose on positive side, I don't like any of the LTE handsets on offer

they're a business, they're installing a service to attract and retain higher value and higher ARPU customers.

hmmm... where do I start? Emmerdale or the capital city of the 6th largest economy of the world and the largest financial centre globally?

Tough one that.

Stop whinging FFS! Its not a charity, it'll rollout eventually and if thats not good enough move to civilisation.

And I say that living somewhere that isn't covered, and I know exactly why it isn't.

I'm not talking about trivial things like home broadband, I'm talking about how much it would benefit our business when moving around 100's of megs of pictures.

Well Im hoping that we will get the Korean version of the Galaxcy S3 on the back of this (SHV-E210K/L/S) LTE 2gb ram and quad core. And not the gimped 4g US model with only a dual core

The Snapdragon S4 with 2GB Ram = WIN! over a UK Exynos Quad. Get with it.

Why? We pay for the privilege.

Exactly.

You expect a firm to invest hundreds of thousands putting a mast in the middle of nowhere, so that you and a few sheep can get an LTE signal.

Ever heard of ROI?

Yup, that would be epic :D

Exclusive Titanium grey version for EE as well!

Going by that link with a hands on its the GT-i9305 that we will be getting which has a full Samsung Exynos 4 Quad with 2gb of ram and LTE, question is do i upgrade to that come October (upgraded to my current S2 on release day) or wait to April/may next year for the next round of handsets.

It's not as simple as that. There are lots of masts that don't pay for themselves based on their own costs and their own revenue. When people choose an operator, they do so on perceived total network quality. It might be that the super rural site is a 'loss leader' to give the impression that they have great coverage. The customer, who only goes walking in the mountains one weekend a year, spending the rest of the time in the city, chooses the network that had that site out in the sticks.

There's some areas of the country that do not receive 3g signal and now the networks are upgrading to 4g - yay!

Totally agree. Where I live I struggle to get 3g with o2 and Orange(although Orange may be better now as t-mobile has great signal) and I live just outside Leeds.
I really hope they sort out 4g coverage properly.

I chose 3 because it was the only network that has 3g at my house. Eventho it only has 1bar of signal . Other networks have much better 2g signal.
Why did I do that? Our wired broadband is slower than 3g signal given to me by 3

People moan about what they have, it's natural, but still gets me when people moan about 5 megabits or 10 megabits

I achieve a consistent 2 to 3 megabits at minimum from 3 with upto 5
What is my minimum from broadband? 0.8 at peak.. Or normal in other words.. Time with up to 3 to 4 mega bits at night

It's places like this that really want and would pay for 4g.i certainly wouldn't pay if i lived in a city with blanket 3g and 10 megabits + wired broadband

Yes I'm aware that economically even though people out here need it more ,that because of the sheer density of people in cities there will be enough that want to pay for it despite the fact its not really needed that it will out way the income from Rural areas. I'm just bitter!

I wonder if manufacturers will make LTE Sim free versions of these phones available to buy in the UK?

I rather get a LTE enabled phone off contract and use it on 3G networks :)

In before 4G successor is being tested and starting to roll out before even 60% of the country gets 4G. :D
