Anyone using 4Gb on an AM2 based system ? plan on upgrading to Quad Core AMD in november, this upgrade will be an almost total system update, cpu, ram and motherboard (rest of system is fine as is, 2900xt, hx620 psu etc).

As i plan to get 4Gb would i be better off getting 4x1gb sticks or 2x2gb sticks as I am aware that AMD systems love having 1T timings, but am i wrong in thinking that 2x2gb could potentially hinder any possible overclocking potential the system could have.

Surely the 2x2gig would give a higher clocking potential than 4x1gig? having all the slots filled usually lowers your maximum clock...

Thats what i thaught also, but after brownsing through several posts on this forum, most have said that current 2x2gb kits besides the much famed and super rare mushkin kit dont clock very well over the rated numbers. If that is the case would have 2x2gb at 1T be better than have 4x1gb at 2T performance wise.

i have build my dad an office pc am2 with 3ghz ram corsair xms2 2x512mbs and 2x1gbs modules so that uses all 4 channels on the mobo. works like a dream withe the 4600 am2 cpu. Hope this helps?

You shouldn't really need to overclock PC5300 or PC6400 on an AMD system. AM2 uses a 200mhz FSB and you would need a 101% overclock to push PC6400 over stock on the 1:1 divider.

And ofcourse it's perfectly fine to run the memory slower than the FSB on an AMD system.

Plus the new AMD chips are also running off an initial 200mhz FSB, so the same should apply to them.

Thats not how it works on AMD.

The Memory runs at a default of 400mhz Real clock or 800mhz DDR (PC6400)

The HT (FSB) runs at 200mhz in bios or 800mhz DDR in Windows, so its 1:1 in Sync with Memory.

As soon as you OC the HT (FSB) to 225mhz, thats 900mhz DDR in Windows as Memory will also be at 900mhz DDR if you have not locked or set a divider.

When AMD's ran DDR not DDR2 it was easier to work out as 200mhz FSB and Memory in bios was 400mhz DDR in Windows.

I just came from a AM2 set up weeks ago and thats how its bios works, the CPU's HT (FSB) and Memory both run @ 800mhz at default in Windows if set to 1:1 Sync in bios.

So they doubled the minimum memory spec for running 1:1 on a set-up that was only a small step forward.

That's madness, even considering that that AM2 doesn't need to run 1:1.

Imagine Intel deciding that Penryn will need PC8500 as opposed to the G0 Conroes needing PC5300.

Mmmmmmmmmmm Ballistix.

;)

oh and they can do more , 500 is sweet spot with very tight subtimings. Max is 1200 if my memory serves me right , @ 5-5-5- etc

if only asus didnt had its horrific vdroop i would run this sucker at 3200mhz . me waits for DFI AM2+
