I don't have my camera in front of me and can't find anything after a quick google but how many images at 6megapixel's can I store on a 4gb card?

Im trying to weigh up which size card to go for as im away for a week and don't want to run out on my 1gb (which I will).

What camera you have?
Because not all cameras support FAT32 meaning you could use only 2GB of card's capacity. (and with SD there's also newer backwards incompatible version of card)

Good quality JPEG should be about 4-5MB. (size varying depending on amount of details in picture)
RAW is around 8MB

Consider multiple smaller cards (1-2gb) rather than a single large card. If you corrupt or lose an 8gb card, you've lost pretty much everything. If a 1gb card is lost you'll only lose some shots - still a lot, but not everything.

Failure rate is pretty low though - with the price of memory against the price we pay for lenses and cameras, it shouldn't be a stretch to get 3 or 4 4gb cards or higher.

1GB card is definitely inconveniently small.

4GB is very good size in one aspect because it's easy to make backups of original photos when copying card's content to PC: Just burn content of one card to DVD!
(you would have to divide 8GB card to two DVDs)

Dual layer blanks tend to be rather expensive and second layer has always higher number of errors so it's quite good bet that they don't withstand aging as well as single layer discs.

Id prefer 2 or more 2GB ones, instead of 1-2 4GB ones. - for those worse case scenarios
