4gb ram

thinking about a new rig in a month or so, as budget isnt a real issue, would it be worth sticking 4gigs of ram in, for some damn good futureproofing

or would it be un-nesesary (i cant spell that word)

Huh? Why's that? I acquiesce that it's not worth it and it can hurt performance but I don't see why GAMES would, in particular, be limited to 2048 MiB RAM.

Its a windows xp limitation, one program can only use 2GiB of virtual address space, if specially optimised as cad programs etc are then it can use 3GiB and 4Gib in xp-64, games don't have this optimisation though it would just be a waste of time for the programmers to implement it when its not needed.

i played HL1 fine on 333 celeron, 256mb SDRAM, onboard 8mb ATi Rage ... my mate had a voodoo 2 on a p266 128mb and ran at 1024x768 fine ...
