Hi.

Specs first -

Intel i5 760
4gb corsair DDR3
ATI 6850
Antec CP 850 Psu
Gigabyte

I will be upgrading to a 7 series in february, is it worth getting 8gb to stop deus ex chugging at 1920x1080?

What's the graphics card? If Deus Ex is chugging then a graphics card upgrade is what is needed.

I was playing it at 1920x1200 and it was fine on my GTX280. I didn't play much though (still on the first level in the warehouse) but it was smooth all the way.

Don't forget you need a Windows 64-Bit OS to take advantage of the extra RAM if its Windows you're using!

Anything over 4Gb in Windows 32-Bit won't be seen by the OS.

Anything over 3.5GB in Windows 32-Bit won't be seen by the OS.

You still lose access to at least 512MB of mem on 32-bit due to video card taking up address space.

There's very little reason to run Windows 7 32bit, 64bit is now a first class citizen for Drivers. (Vista and XP 64 were crap).

8GB is worth having for general use, gives the OS enough space to breathe and run multiple background processes whilst you game.

It won't help Deus Ex.

I'd say it's not the OS that was crap for drivers, it was the drivers made for them that were crap.

The companies manufacturing their devices were such tightwads that they couldn't get their programmers to make 64-bit drivers for recent products at that time.

However that way the consumer would have to buy new products in the end to use it with a 64 bit OS so they can make more money that way.

Drivers for Windows 7 64-bit is great now only because the driver makers have had time (XP and mainly Vista x64) to switch over to the new model of programming them and now a larger portion of users have 64-bit so they support it.

You're probably right, apart from NVIDIA, Intel & ATI drivers were invariably crap or non existent. Regardless, almost everything has solid 64 bit drivers these days, every CPU supports it. There's very little reason to run 32 bit anymore. (If you use some very legacy Windows 3.11 16bit applications, then you need Win 7 32 bit).

What mobo do you have fella. Does it do Xfire properly?

I'm assuming by 7 series you mean the "new" ati GPUs. If your mobo can do Xfire, it's possible to buy another 6850 to improve performance. Once the new GPUs are out and benchmarked we can compare them against the 6850 in xfire and see what is best for your budget at the time.

It's pretty common to see 8GB of RAM go for £30ish on special offers here. I'd agree that adding more isn't going to stop your game from "chugging". The 6850 is a budget card and actually worse than the 5850 it replaced. You may need to adjust the graphics settings in game to get the FPS up.

Yeah that's because they're the big companies and have professional users needing to use 64-bit systems.

If you really need to run legacy Win 3.11 16-bit programs you could always use a virtual machine via a 64-bit system :)

We digress :)

A 6850 should be able to run Deus Ex maxed out, it didn't chug with some settings turned down on my mobile 8600GT @ 1440x900 with 256MB. Surely a 6850 has 1GB minimum?

Try turning down the AA a notch.

I know mate, just wanted to keep it short, thats all.

I know what you mean but I've 32Bit on one of my systems for the very reason that some of the drivers and programs I needed, didn't run too well on it.

Saying that, I'm going to be doing a HTPC build very soon (funds allowing), would you think W7 64Bit would be alright with Media Centre the min usage with a TV tuner?

Thank you.
