4GB VS 8GB

I only run 60hz @ 1080p. Got an old samsung led monitor, think its the
bx2235 which isn't too bad.

The advantages i can see from upgrading are
- less power consumption
- no crossfire problems / poor game optimisation (until i get another 290x when the 3 series comes)

and after i sell my tri-x and toxic, i'll probably only be paying just over £100 for the new card.

but is it WORTH IT

All the hype now about 4GB not being enough those same people are going to be falling over themselves to buy a 4GB 390X when they see the performance numbers, 8GB is a luxury nothing more and by the time it becomes worthwhile there'll be far better GPU's available. It's been that way since the late 90s, additional GPU memory has just been a way of milking more money from those who simply must have the best.

+1

But if you're planning for the future (2 years) and want to play things at Max (inc AA) then to be safe and to cater for these games now and in the future you're looking at:

1920x1080 - 3GB - 1 GPU

Not being funny but considering we already have games use over 3GB at 1080p I'm struggling to see how you came up with 3GB being safe for the future. You're entitled to your opinion though of course.

and i'm pretty sure, dying light on full settings uses well above 4gb vram as it stutters an drops below 30 fps with crossfire ffs :'(

Nothing comes close to using the full 4gb on my card. I use a single monitor at 144 hertz so can see that being plenty for a few years. Max settings Shadow of mordor and dying light no problems, the memory specs are nonsense.

Any word on them 8gig 980s? is that even a real thing? atm you seem stuck bet wen having a massive heat issue with AMD or potentially not enough vram to deal with next years disappointing AAA's with Nvidia.

I've been looking at the 8gb 290x myself and while surely overkill for today, if you plan to pick up another some time down the line and have an 8gb crossfire setup going on, surely that would make it more worthwhile? Thus turning it into a much more powerful setup and hopefully able to use the extra vram better.

I doubt it. 8Gb = good for 4k. Xfire 290x's = not so great fps at 4k. The Vram wont make up for it.

For now, 4Gb is the better option. Tomorrow, a new GPU with better FPS at 4k.

I would love to see some single card results of 290x's in both 4 and 8GB configurations ?

If anyone knows of any?

Ah interesting, so basically the gpu itself just isn't powerful enough to deliver good fps in 4k even in crossfire? Not saying I disagree with you, just intrigued :)

How much of an impact does the crossfire make, other than the performance increase of a second card is they any other factors that two cards will work better for the 8gb?

Cheers

It is just literally the performance increase because although you can see the 8GB catching up to the 980 when really pushed in a high vram game like Shadow of Mordor, the 30fps is barely playable for most people. The often repeated saying that there's no point if you've run out of grunt by the time the extra vram is being put to use.

Ah cool good stuff :D im just literally about to bite the bullet and get two 290x 8gb for x-fire for 1440P 144hz gaming. most of the reviews I read say the frames arnt as high as lets says 980 sli but the gaming experience is a lot smoother

Which kind of contradicts everything I though. I assumed more frames meant smoother gameplay :S

You can save £100 per card by getting the 4GB version and turning the textures in SoM from ultra to high.

I was using a 2GB 680 up until July last year which did run out of VRAM in some games at 1440p. I replaced it with a 3GB 780 and haven't hit the limit yet. So all this talk of needing more than 4GB is a little odd.
