4gig ram

So will 4gb be benificial worthwhile when vista is released then?
I dunno but I'll ask my friend, not only is he an overclocker but also a time traveller, I'll get him to transport to Jan 2008 and test out some games and stuff under Vista, I'll get back to you . . . but it may take some time! ;) :D

4GB can only be addressed by 64-bit operating systems, so as long as you are running 32-bit then kiss goodbye to the idea and necessity of 4GB.

Agreed. And as Vista 64 is currently not benching well in independent trials I'd say the hardware boys need to pull their fingers out and get some optimised drivers pdq.

If i had Vista, would 4 gig of ram be used and used well?

We don't know. On paper, yes. In practice Vista (32 or 64) looks like it's not a fast OS anyway so it could be that by switching you could be making a big mistake. If you've got a set of Partner Program CD's then it's worth spending £60 or so on couple of identical new 80Gb HDD and installing it cleanly as a dual boot. That way you can compare the two OS back to back on exactly the same hardware. Only the OS and it's drivers will be different. I genuinely wasn't very impressed (I could not get NVidia RAID running no matter what).

i guess having more ram may have an effect on your overlock aswell?
well tasty could only get his 4x1gigs to 375. which if youre running a e6600 isnt that good considering.

Once 2x2gig sets start to arrive in their masses and with good performance, we'll know then.

I probably should let Tastyweat explain his system himself but as I understand it he's running 375 to get good tight timings (3-3-3-8). I also believe he has a 680i board and is running Asynchronous timings so the RAM speed is independent of the CPU overclock.

And most E6600 would be quite happy with 375FSB as that's 3.375GHz which is about what they top out at on stock volts.

later on in 2k7 id bet that new games when running vista will benifit from having 4gigs of ram but I dont think now is the time to get it

4 gig of Team Xtreem  , now that would be interesting, at the end of the day no harm in buying it with vista 64 then if it's not used as much as expected and run some of your own benchmarks then sell it, this is what i shall be doing, i'm sure Team Xtreem will hold it's value pretty well ;)

I read on one review measuring timings performance that tighter ones gave negligable performance boosts. Cant remember the site though... :/

Unless tasty fancies benching at those he's got now then wacking them up to 5,5,5,15 or something...

If you really want to buy RAM, I'd wait until May/June/July/August as that is when the lowest price is projected in 2007.

I haven't tried pushing it yet - still running at 2.1V & haven't had time to push it

Yup - and guess what speed I'm running my cpu at :)

From my perspective, lower timings improve general windows performance (reduces lag) & gaming - well... 3d mark scores for sure.

Video encoding - that's a totally different story - 750 @ 3-3-3 compared to 1050 @ 5-5-5 makes a BIG difference...

750 take about 12 minutes or so and 1050 takes about 10

4 Gig already in my machine and running Vista x64 :P

And it's useless without a comparative analysis. So - if you be so kind as to run 32M SuperPi, 3DMark '06 and SiSoft Sandra with 2 and 4GB of RAM installed we can see if it makes any difference!

4gb of ram will get you higher scores in all benchmark programs
i tested this, and that was only using windows XP wich only
showed 3gb i would imagine 4gb fully will show better
results in a 64bit vista

it took 1 second of super pi 1m run and 2 mins of 32m run
all benchamark programs like 3dmark 06, metabench, fritz chess benchmark,
sciencemark.
