Hi friends, I’ll be picking up a 5090 end of the month and want to build a new system for it. I only use it for gaming so high frames and quality is the aim.

Given the following requirements, which parts would you choose?

Budget not a huge concern, but standard bang for buck applies (e.g. No need to spend over the odds for a ~2% type of benefit)
Air cooling

I’ll have:
  • RTX 5090 FE (hopefully)

I need:
  • Case (ATX, good ventilation)
  • Mobo (bluetooth and wifi required, does spending more here net much gaming benefit?)
  • CPU (and cooler)
  • RAM (32gb is fine, but would 64gb make much difference to games?)
  • NVMe (1TB is fine)
  • PSU
Not into RGB, all black would be preferred.

I've been out of the loop for several years and so your guidance would be really appreciated, thank you!

Hi.

9800x3d is the obvious choice , do to want 32gb or 64gb of memory 6000mhz C30 is optimal what size m2 and rough budget for motherboard?

Would you prefer a Value for money build or higher end spending a bit more on motherboars , , etc ?

RGB ?

Thanks @mickyflinn , edited my post with more details.

I'm fine to spend more if the benefits are worth it (e.g. i'm going to net 5 - 10 more frames for several hundred more)

If it’s for gaming, there is no need to go overkill for ram. A 32gb 6000 CL30 kit will be fine and is a good way of cutting costs.

There is, from everything I’ve seen, very nominal gains in gaming from going beyond this. On the other hand, the more expensive ram will be £100-300 more, which is a small amount compared to the cost of other components.

For my own recent build I went with 32gb 6000 CL28 ram. I then used Buildzoid’s timings for ddr5 ram (vid on YouTube) and it pulls ~70ms in Aida memory latency, which is not world beating but it’s fine.

Below is an example

I've put 2 cases and 2 nvme drives to choose from the m2 drives one without dram and the Kingston with. 2 memory the more expensive has tighter timmings but very simmlar performance.

Some options are pre order so if you delete one of the double options then roughly minus £250 of the basket price around £1200 total

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £1,476.82 (includes delivery: £15.99)

If you play DCS or (maybe) Cities Skyline 2 then go for 64 GB.
I play with controller on my tv in the living room, mostly standard blockbuster fare (God of War, Silent Hill 2, Cyberpunk, Alan Wake 2). Does it make sense to go for 64gb just to be future safe over the next 5 years?

@mickyflinn thanks for putting this together, that's a huge help.

I am going to research this, but in your opinion, what's the benefit to an NVMe with dram vs without? and how relevant are read / write speeds in gaming these days?

Memory on AM5 it's best to got 2 sticks as adding them later usually affects maximum speed . 64 GB does makes sense in terms of never having to bother with it again ,also if you get into heavy modded games that can eat up memory.

Dram drives help sustained the maximum speeds so for an extra £25 it's worth it imo but no real benefit in game but you have future capability .

There are lots of options do some research and check benchmark reviews etc then come back with you choose parts so we can check it for you if you wish.

I personally would be tempted to buy watercooler and put in the top of the case giving your build a cleaner look as that 5090 gonna look big in there .

I love this cae.

What would you recommend? that case looks lovely! I've never built a water cooled system but i'd be up for giving it a go. My current rig was built in 2020 so I'm hoping this upgrade does the next 4-5 years as well.

Just an all in one cooler for the cpu not a custom loop.

The best value to performance are arctic freezer 3 but they have a thicker radiator than most at 38mm while most others are 27mm plus 25mm for the fan applies to both.

This is a good cooler for the money that will in the above case but lots of options out there.
