Im going to be getting my first car next year in about feb time when i finally start earning a full time wage

Apparently i have 3k in a saved account my dad has been putting money in since i was little, and i will add 1k to the cost but pay that 1k off monthly (if i can do that otherwise just get a 1k loan or something)

Anyways im 18 with NCB (been driving my parents 1.6 ghia focus 06 plate 115bhp)

I've been looking around and the type of car i would need is :

One that may been stood mon-friday without been started but then do about 200-300 motorway miles on a weekend.

Something with abit of power in but not going to kill me on insurance, so i was thinking a 1.4/1.6 focus 3door, or a 1.8 mondeo?

Would it be best to a get petrol or diesel car?

What mk is this?

Im going to have a look on autotrader but do you think i would be able to get something like that for 4k?

If I were you I would spend no more than the 3k your dad has saved for you. You can get a very nice car for that without taking any money from your own pocket.

My car cost £1650 it has flawless bodywork and hasn't broken down once in the three years I've had it. So for almost double that money you can get something you will really be happy with.

Peronsally if I'd already been driving a focus and even more so if my parents had a focus I would want to get something different.

What do you have?

Would i be able to get a decent golf for 4k?

For 4k you can get an Alfa Romeo 147, and if you get a Diesel Alfa you will never have any of the usual cambelt niggles that petrol Alfas have :)

You can get something decent for 3k because you are only after a low range model anyway.

Well I have a Peugeot 106 but you can get something nicer given you have more money and things have moved on since i got my car.

You can definately get a decent golf for 4k (or even 3k) but it will have higher miles for the same price as a Focus or Astra of the same age. The Alfa is a good shout but only if you will have money for fairly expensive service charges.

how bad are alfas on insurance?

25yrs, 0 NCB, I get quotes of between £800-£1500. With Pass Plus, I get quotes of £450-£1100.

That's for the 3door 1.9 JTD.

thats sexy

Oh yeah!!!

Most of them are petrol, so you need to change cambelt after 32-36k miles; also, the TwinSpark is oil hungry, its recommended to check the oil monthly, if not bi-weekly and keep it topped up  But looking at it again, its SO worth it  Still, I'd rather go for a Diesel, if nothing else but for the extra mpg.

i can't get insurance for one :( :(

Try moneysupermarket. Do you have PassPlus? If you do, try the quote generator with 1yr NCB, might give you something. Also, try adding one of your parents as 2nd driver; alternatively, ask your parents nicely if they will insure it, with you as second driver? :)
