Right guys I currently have

Xeon 1230v3
8GB RAM
Sapphire R9 290

running a acer 4k monitor.

currently playing elite dangerous, H1Z1, LOL, payday 2, war thunder games like that.

Do also play bf4.

I currently get 90fps in elite on High with AA turned off but when in station thats drops to around 30 and the card starts getting really hot 85+.

What card do you reckon will be a decent upgrade?

I know I will need a new gpu really so will be budgeting for a 1,000w PSU first.

So far i'm thinking

R9 295X2 as it seems to be the biggest performance gain.

How would 2 X 970's performe against this?

GTX Titan?

or wait until the next gen ATI are released?

Thanks.

Hopefully Kaapstad will pop into your thread. He has four 290Xs, Titans and 980s and uses this resolution.

Before the 970's and 980 and 295 came along the choice for 4k gaming was Crossfire R9 290's from reviews I read so perhaps put another one in ?

I tried 1x980 at 4k and thought it was a bit lacking so then went with 970 SLI and I think its brilliant. Some games you can have a bit of AA. I was shocked when I tried Shadow of Mordor, with HD pack, High/Ultra everything including FXAA/Motion/Object blur setting and it was really smooth. If I turned Gsync off with same settings it stuttered.

My reference 970's were running 61c / 75-80c on air but now they are water cooled they are both below 50c.

My 970s reach 60c when gaming in 4k, the last AMD card i bought was a 5990 and always up to 98c.

Huntyz how is your screen on the Predator. I've been looking for other users with it as mine has bad backlight bleed round the edges and stuck red pixels. Its been returned to Acer for the second time today.

Hmm sorry to hear that i cant fault mine at all. (no dead pixels that i can see and i haven't noticed any backlight bleed)

Ive only had it a week or so.

Get another 290 or as suggested earlier get the 295x2 and make it a tri-fire setup. I have 3 x 290's and they crush 4k res pretty well honestly. You'd actually do well with just the two if you're not cranking up the AA and all.

Honestly if you are hitting 85C with the R9 290 Tri-X (which it shouldn't), I really think you should spend some time looking at your case and think about the airflow before even considering going crossfire.

Cause at the moment it sounds to me that your case is not bringing in cool air in and exhausting heat out of the case efficiently...could you post some picture of your case and where the fans are and which direction are they installed.

If you are hitting 85degrees now then another 290 isn't a good option, they will constantly throttle.

A 295x is possible if you have space though, it vents heat out of the case nicely

This is my case
Corsair Carbide 300R Mid Tower Windowed Case

Have intake fan, top exhaust, water cooler exhaust out the back.

this is why i'm thinking a 970 and possibly anopther in the future.

Temps only go into the 80's when docked in elite but then i get massive frame drops so guessing its throttling.

this is why i was thinking the GTX970 as they use a lot less power and run cooler
