Were looking at upgrading our current Samsung 51" plasma, Have been looking at the LG range.

Is/will it be worth spending the extra for 4k HD? Tv we are looking at just now is an extra £300 on top for 4k HD :o

4K content is starting to appear, but at a slow pace, like above, if you have 4K content you can watch now then do it, but if you want to buy a new TV just so it has 4K, i wouldn't bother, save your money and buy something in the new year. :)

/\/\/\/\ This. Its too early to get into 4K right now as content is lacking & I think it will be at least a year or two before it becomes mainstream.

I'd go & have a look at 4K tellies first (not curries though) :p & make a comparison with 1080p content on each before making a desicion. :)

How often do you upgrade? If you upgrade every couple of years then it may be best to wait or the next upgrade*. If you'll probably upgrade next in 5-10 years then I'd say get a 4k TV, especially if it's really only a few hundred more than the TV you were thinking of getting (and the non pixel number PQ is about the same). The reality is in 3 years there will probably be a lot of 4k content and then you'll regret buying a non 4k TV for the next 5 years until your next upgrade...

Alternatively wait a few more months with your current TV and see what's available then.

*but if you upgrade every couple of years I'm assuming you will be wanting the "best" anyway and would go 4k now...

Thanks guys, We have been looking at the below,

At the moment we have a 51" Samsung plasma but due to a lightning storm it took out the HDMI ports when the satellite dish was struck. This is the only reason we are buying a new tv.

We are not into watching films ect yes the odd film now and again the tv will be mainly used for normal tv viewing, netflix and the xbox one.

New tv will be staying with us until its dead/out of warranty.

If your mostly watching tv, your going to be disappointed with the picture quality . As it stands , no tv company is making 4k tv ( sky will be soon ) , netflix have got a few 4k shows in the works ( but that's not true 4k ) , and that's your lot. Hell the beeb cant even do proper 1080p , so your waiting a long time for tv to catch up.

I'm not sure sure on that. 3d was a massive failure. And like I said, there are not a lot of companies doing 4k atm . most 4k tvs are rubbish playing old sd stuff . And OP doesn't watch that many films. Its a waste if thats the case.

I'd maybe look at getting a 2nd hand tv to last a couple of years .

I'm curious on how… They don't deliver great 1080 and their satellites are saturated. More, more, more mediocre SD channels. How can they deliver 4k when it requires more bitrate than 1080, that they can't deliver with 1080 as it is.

Most of the compression on Sky HD is diabolical now. Banding on bright colours now. It's awful, awful on low light scenes. Looks like Windows 95/98 16-bit mode days. Some channels it's so bad it's no longer banding. It's blotches in the dark scenes.

The sound quality is also lost because they've compressed the backside out of it. It's flat and dull because of it.

I can't believe the number of times I have had to delete new channels recently.
I can't believe anyone watches them... All time stealing bandwidth

And they'll be plenty of people who buy 4K TVs now or have bought them already only to discover when you get things like 4K Blu Ray players or AVR's that can handle native 4K their sets aren't compatible.

I'm happy with where I sit with 4k
5yr JL warranty should see my plasma right through to proper 4k is sensible choice.
If I was buying a TV now because I had to. I'd probably want 4k.

Yep so true :(

The only good time to buy a 4k tv is when the 4k blu ray players are out . Then you know you got the standard

I'm hoping my Panasonic plasma will keep going for another few years yet until 4k is mainstream. It has taken a very long time for HD to take off, and it still looks great. If my TV broke tomorrow I wouldn't buy a 4k set. I might see things a little differently if I were buying a projector on the other hand due to the screen size.
