Just looking for a bit of advice, because I keep going round in circles-

I keep reading that now is not a great time to spend serious money on a TV- advent of HDR, relentless march of technology etc.

The thing is, I'm doing my house up and currently have a 6-7 year old Panasonic Viera plasma that has seen better days- been wall-mounted over a log burner and is starting to go a bit barmy. Plus, everything's rearranged so it would need a stand now, and I'm guessing my chances of finding one are negligible.

So the question is, do I get something cheap and cheerful for a year, or do I spend more than I really wanted to try and future-proof myself as much as I can now?

I've been looking at the LG 55EG960V, currently with free soundbar/sub from Curry's and JL- seems a good deal but I was really thinking closer to 2k- I could probably strech to it, but I'd have to have a bit of a cry afterwards :D.

Any advice would be hugely appreciated- I've been reading so much stuff I think I've gone a bit telly-blind!

From what I've heard, OLED has sustainability issues right now. If I were you I'd pick up something solid like a Sony W829 and sit tight for a year or two with it while OLED becomes more established and lower priced.

The W829 is near flawless imho and then factor in the price and it's a no brainer

It's a bit difficult to get future-proofed for say the next 5 years when some of the specs for UHDTV still haven't been finalised. Also, as others have pointed out, OLED still isn't mature.

None of the above might matter if a £3.5K TV was something easily affordable to you and you were happy to replace it in 3 years or so when (if) the dust finally settles. But to break the bank to buy something that isn't quite right yet.... does that really sound sensible?

If you absolutely must have 4K in its present form then go with one of the LED TVs for the time being.

Cheers, good advice I think- Like I said, it'd be a stretch to spend that much- not worth it for a couple of years' use.

If I'm getting a stop-gap TV, I guess 4k might be a bit daft/unnecessary too? If anyone could reccomend me a couple of good 1080p TVs it'd be a big help- save me going through another million reviews!

That W829 looks good, but I wouldn't mind spending another few hundred quid if it got me something significantly better- I don't want to be spending for the sake of it, but the OH and I are big film watchers, so I'd like the best I can reasonably get.

Thanks guys!

Okay, so what do people reckon as regards W829 vs. the new W805? Worth the extra?

I think if I'm going this way I'll probably keep it for a couple of years at least, until things have moved on a bit.

1080p should be fine for a while imo, I'm still yet to really see any 4K content being mainstream, 1080p still looks good even if proper 4K will look nicer.

So yeah I agree, stopgap that saves you some cash which can be put towards a really nice set in 2-3 years might get you a nicer TV eventually.

On the other hand. Treat yo self!

will be ages before 4k is mainstream - yes i now sky is meant to be about to launch 4k service anytime but from what ive heard the bandwidth is going to be awful at 6Mbits and the picture hardly any better than decent 1080p.

Plus Sky have said that unless your 4k tv was bought after MArch of this year then there is a fair chance its not going to work with their system. Another reason to never be an early adoptor of new tech.

There will be 4k TV's with new protocols and connectors coming out in the next year of so and all the old current 4k tvs might just become useless junk.

So id buy a stop gap. Personally, im not buying another tv until oled 4k ones are affordable and the standards has been sorted and ratified.
