4k or 1440p for 3080Ti?

Hi,

I'm currently rocking a 3080Ti and looking into a monitor upgrade later on after sending back a few I didn't get along with. Would 1440p would be more suitable given the 12GB frame buffer and terrible optimization seen in stuff like Forspoken, Jedi Survivor, etc? I have a 5800X and would probably need a full system upgrade if I purchased a 4090/7900XTX.

Thanks.

IMHO, it's possible to get the best of both worlds. A 4k120Hz+ monitor has you covered for either 4k or 1440p high refresh rate. Considering each game performs differently and there will probably be a handful of games out there that one can get high fps at 4k on a 3080ti, you'll have all the optioons available. It's also a bit more future-proof, no need to buy another 4k monitor in the future, when you upgrade your build. Why choose when you can have both.

I had this mentality with my current 1440p144hz monitor many years back. Back then I had options of either running 1080p high FPS or 1440p ~60ish. Now, I don't need to worry about buying a monitor for my upcoming build (though TBF I'm not even buying a GPU). The next monitor I'd upgrade to would have to be a 4k high refresh rate for it to be worth it. Unlike GPUs, a monitor isn't something that one upgrades every few years, get a good one and it lasts.

When I look at monitor pricing, 4k high refresh is priced similar to how 1440p high refresh used to be. The good 1440p high refresh monitors feel way cheaper nowadays.

If you want suggestions of what models to buy, you can either hop on the monitor section of these forums or check out videos like this:

If I was buying a 4k monitor today, it would be the LG 32GR93U. A lot more affordable for a 32" 4k144Hz IPS, under £700. And it performs very well, very low ghosting rates, though the response times are a couple milliseconds behind the G8, which admittedly is a VA panel (hence the response time advantage, but also a higher ghosting rate).

Unfortunately, I don't have space for a second monitor, since I'd want to keep my current one.

If I'm being sensible another 2-3 years but I've spent time looking at 4090s and XTXs for the past year which isn't a promising sign

Once you get a 4K monitor, you will upgrade sooner rather than later unless you are happy to drop settings, resolution, etc.

But apparently TPU says the RTX4090 was CPU limited and they had to upgrade their test system!

Your 3080ti 12GB @ 1440p would be fine for current games but will struggle soon @ 4K without using DLSS.

I would wait until the new SUPER edition Nvidia cards are out in January then go from there.
