Have recently got a 4k TV but can't play 4k from Plex server without buffering. I have put file onto ssd to eliminate my USB drive as an issue. Running server on pc, have tried connecting to shield via gigabit switch and still getting buffering issue. It says it's direct playing so not a transcoding issue. What is the best way to test bandwidth between shield and server. The performance under task manager shows it fluctuation lot when attempting to play content.

does your TV have a DLNA player? If so use that to use browse Plex's DLNA service to see if it will play that way over the network. If it does then a Plex app issue.

If the hardrive the file is stored on is being written to, or in use by another program, at the same time as you are trying to stream from it. Then that can also cause buffering, no matter how fast the network connection is.

I run the PMS directly on the Shield (2018) and access that via the Plex app (also on the Shield) - a 60GB UHD film on a 4TB USB drive, will play that content without major issues for me - the only thing I notice is that skipping forward takes about 5-10 seconds to process.

Switched to using shield as the server and its working surprisingly well, has the plus that I am not longer running my desktop 24/7 should result in nice surprise next electric bill. Hoping I can pick up a second cheap 6Tb or more USB hd in prime day sale.
