4K testing with SLI Titans on Windows 7 and Windows 8.1

Maybe I'm misunderstanding the original post, but doesn't it invalidate the test if the drivers are different? Surely everything should be exactly the same except the OS?

You have a fair point but the only difference between the drivers on Windows 7 and the drivers on Windows 8 was some SLI profiles for games that are not included in the test. I should have put the same drivers on in fairness but didn't realise till I was adding all the stats into Excel.

Did a fresh install of Windows 8.1 Pro onto my main rig yesterday and, whilst I've used it before on my laptop, I am impressed so far with the performance using a powerful desktop. It feels much snappier (and much faster to load) than Windows 7, also from a couple of games that I've played on it, it feels quite a bit smoother overall - Watch Dogs seems to have improved a bit.

Very happy with it so far overall, really don't understand why so many people hate it - it handles multi-threaded applications much better, it gives smoother performance in games, it loads very quickly on an SSD, it is a lot snappier to respond than Windows 7 and you can continue using the traditional desktop interface (and right clicking where the start button would be gives you lots of useful windows programs to access easily) :)

Similar to my finds PM. Everything feels snappier and loading is much quicker. I had the same W7 install for ever, so not sure if it had got bloated and sluggish because of that or it was that slow. I am very happy with it anyways and games do seem to run well. Only been hitting BF4 in truth but still had a play on others, if only briefly.

As I explained on MLG, Windows 8 has been rewritten in a major way.

Windows 7 natively only wants four cores. This is why there are all of these core parking hacks and god knows what else around. Thing is, it doesn't change the kernel.

Whilst Windows 8 Metro is about as appealing as smashing your belmet with a sledge hammer once you hack it out (I use Iobit) the core support is just other worldly. Even in apps that do not use high core counts Windows seems to spread the load around seamlessly.

If you're an AMD user then Windows 8 is an absolute must. 8 was written to support the BD and PD CPUs natively, instead of relying on patches (that didn't actually work so M$ just removed the download links).

Of course, no one anywhere is ever going to admit this because they enjoyed slating AMD so much (mmm, Intel  )

Any way, yeah, basically if you game and you have a CPU with more than four cores (I7s count) then get off 7 and onto 8.

I wouldn't go back if you paid me.

Hope to get the LG 34UM95 Ultra wide screen soon. Its a choice between that and a 4k screen but for racing games I think you just cant beat that ultra wide aspect ratio and I don't have room for an eyefinity setup on my desk so that seems like the next best thing.
The only worry I have is going back down to 60hz from 144hz.
Do you feel the higher res is worth the trade off for 144hz?
Bring on the day they do 120hz and higher 4k panels :D

Nice monitor :)

I personally am glad I went 4K and stopped using the 120Hz but that is subjective to each person really. Someone who only really plays twitch shooters would probably take 120Hz all day long.
