Hi all,

so looking for a 4k Smart TV between 37"-48". (G-sync monitor far too expensive at a much smaller size).
It will mainly be for pc gaming (see rig in my sig below).
I'd like to game at nigh on 4k resolutions from about 4-5ft away but not sure if my experience will suffer from;
a) lag
b) fps drop
etc

If either of the above might happen, could i effectively run the game at 1920x1080 and it still look good on the 4k tv, bearing in mind it won't be using the TV's native resolution.

Advice appreciated. :)

Oh Canada!
The input lag on TV's, especially OLED TV's is absolutely disgusting. If that's ok, go for it.

Yes 1080P will look fine as it divides evenly into 4K.

Don't expect the responsiveness of a gaming monitor. Not even close. It'll feel laggy and sloppy.

Gold Coast.
Doom, BF1 / 4, Diablo 3, Wolfenstein and Metro 2033 all feel fine to me, but im no expert.

4k @ 60Hz @ 4:4:4 + 8 bit HDR / 37.6ms =0.0376 s is where i game at it doesnt feel laggy at all. I honestly don't think i could ever go smaller (ok maybe a 49", 5/8k, HDR 2.0, 120+hz panel in 2025 lol)

2016 Samsung KS8000
1080p @ 60Hz / 20.9ms
1080p With Interpol / 118.9ms
1080p @ 60Hz Outside Game Mode / 113.5ms
1080p @ 60Hz @ 4:4:4 / 37.8ms
4k @ 60Hz / 22.7
4k @ 60Hz @ 4:4:4 / 37.4ms
4k @ 60Hz + HDR / 21.1ms
4k @ 60Hz @ 4:4:4 + 8 bit HDR / 37.6 ms

You couldn't be more wrong, particularly on the OLED part, and the new OLED's will do 1080p 120hz.

I've used a 2540x1440 144hz ROG Swift, 3440x1440 100hz Ultrawide ROG Swift and now have a new LG 55B7V OLED and I have not noticed any difference in input lag, pixel response time on OLED cannot be beaten by LCD monitors either.

If we're talking about fps shooters such as CS:GO that require twitch responses then a couple of ms input lag may be noticeable over 20ms, but why would anyone be doing that type of gaming on a large screen TV anyway.

upscalers on TV's are a lot better than those on monitors. so 1080p should be okay.

as for your other questions try and find a 4k tv with low input lag, usually sony or samsung nowadays but it changes every few years so double check review sites.

tbh 4k gaming isn't all that. i'd rather go 2K and 144hz or even 1080p and 144hz on a smaller screen but be closer to it.

i don't understand how your going to use a mouse and keyboard several feet away from the tv. unless you have a desk in the middle of a room and the tv is wall mounted

My intention would be to use the wall mounted TV only for games that need a controller and for watching movies, Netflix etc.. I also get annoyed with games that don't support 21:9 (my only monitor right now is a X34a) however a 27" 1440 16:9 screen could probably do the same job and provide me with another screen for productivity.

like you would any other kb/mouse either USB or 2.4GHz/Bluetooth.

Several 'lap' products came out last year specifically for this task.

TV does not have to be wall mounted

read the information on blur-busters here and here
they suggest that 60hz panels maybe double scanned such that you write top & bottom half of screen simultaneously at 60hz,
and the panels are not allowing all pixels to be scanned from top to bottom (like a crt electron gun) at 120hz - true 120hz.
the limitation of the double scanning being that the pixels are lit for longer than they would be creating more motion blu than would be expected with true 120hz.
the rtings c7 review says they have some 120hz problems, that maybe related to 120hz implementation
Update 05/31/2017: 1080p @ 120 Hz + HDR does not work properly. Its brightness appears to be following the SDR gamma curve rather than the HDR PQ curve, making everything look off and too bright.
with the oled lower brightness versus lcd, if the pixels are on for twice as long as true 120hz, that will also help attain brightness and preserve lifespan (not 'overdriving')
I think it would be interesting to ask Vincent on his c7 review.
