Ok ... I've found myself in a dilemma .

I have The Martian on pre-order with the rainforest site on blu ray . Now I have a 4k tv and intend grabbing a Samsung 4k ultra player as soon as it's available in the uk .

So the question is .... do I wait for the 4k ultra version , which will also come with blu ray and a digital hd download or double dip ?

Prices will be higher of course . Damn I hate it when new tech messes with my head lol

And does anyone know if 4k films will be region locked ? As I might order off amazon us if not

Well you're presumably buying the 4K Blu-ray player for a reason. If you're happy with the crazy cost then go for it.

Well ive seen the Martian ultra at $29 .... and early adopters always pay more . I was in with dvd in 1998. You get shafted lol

What! A 4k ultra blu ray player for £100 and the Martin ultra blu ray for $30. Crazy cost.
Andi.

£100 ? I think your being optimistic on that one lol . more like £400 ( taking into account the usual bs conversion rate )

unless you know a player I don't ???

My bad, yes it was an upscale device :-( Even so £400 is just a decent video card or cheap tv.

Who to say 4K will take off anyway , 3D did not

4K is only for the few i think and its only for the hardcore buyers , can`t see families buying into 4K

I would still buy normal blu ray , its going to take years before 4K goes main stream in the high street , might turn out laser discs :D

I suggest you do exactly the same as I suspect you did when Blu ray came out.

You buy your favourites that you can afford in 4k otherwise just get the Blu ray and slowly over time your collection will move to the new standard.

Maybe 4k and HDR will not massively go mainstream but for those of us who are enthusiasts and can afford it will buy it and I am certain will be very happy with it.

So if not enough people buy into 4K and HDR will companies like Sony,Samsung,Panasonic pull out ?

4K is easily marketed and it will eventually become much like HD TV's where you will struggle to buy anything else. Its still very early for adoption but why not if that's your thing. I would cancel the bluray only to be honest. It would also be interesting to hear the differences between the blu ray and ultra versions on a 4k tv/player setup.

tbh I have little doubt that both technologies will go mainstream just a matter of how long it takes.

It is early days still for 4k but most big new TVs are now 4k with a very small price differential and I can only see that continuing with the newest all adding HDR in to the mix.

I also have absolutely no doubt that 4k Blu ray players will again improve the home video experience in a trend that started with home VCRs and just keeps getting better.

I am absolutely certain 4k gives an improvement over 1080 and frankly if you can afford to pay for that improvement then why not.

For me curved TVs and 3d where a fad but 4k gives a clear and obvious improvement and I genuinely do not understand the naysayers, HDR the jury is out as what little I have seen has not been enough.

My girl friend already preordered The Martian on Bluray then I see it's one of the first 4K Bluray's, typical, I will be picking up a 4K player when they come out, hopefully no more than a few hundred, but I'm also wondering when they are coming to the UK as I've only seen them on the US Jungle site.

Also wondering about HDR as I have an older 4K Panasonic and even though they say it should be fine I don't know how it will effect the picture.

Either way I'm all in, I don't understand people who still buy DVD's, it's been about ten years since Bluray was released, I will definitely pick up my favourite movies on 4K and slow on the normal bluray purchases, especially as it seems a lot of the 4K disc's will come with a normal bluray version anyway.

As for region locking, looks like it's the same as Bluray with three regions, A, B and C, some will be locked, others won't.

This. I paid silly money for a Panasonic DVD player in 1998, only to sell it on & buy a Sony Multi-region Model about 18 months later.

Blu-ray? I only bought the one player & still have it. I paid less than half the price I paid for the DVD player almost 2 years after blu-ray had the market to itself. 4K? Too expensive for my taste right now thanks. :p

was it the a100 by any chance ? Had that chipped by the local Panasonic shop on purchase . Paid £440 for it in Oct 1998 . I still remember how impressed I was by judder-free pause lol
