@ManCave
So i'm considering upgrading to 4K.
Im running 5930K & 980 SLI so should handle it "ok"

what i would like to hear though is actaul user settings people are using on 4K with their setup

For example of what im looking for
Gregster could say
Setup: 5960x Titan X
Watch dogs
i had to turn settings down to High from Ultra to get 60fps

Witcher i have to run medium vs Ultra for 60fps

& do you regret it cost/Experience wise?

you get the point

Acer 4k
4790k
Crossfire 290x 8gb's

Elite dangerous - max everything stays over 60fps in space 45 docked
Gtav- high / medium settings aa on lowest to stay at 60fps grass medium.
Dirty bomb - max everything 140fps
Bf4 - max everything stays at 60.

Deffinatly dont regret 4k. Only issues are when crossfire / sli profiles dont work and it struggles to do 4k with 1 card. 4gb vram will be ur limit though in some games.

At home I have an Acer Predator 4K and an Asus ROG Swift.

4K or UHD (3840x2160) detail is amazing. Much better than QHD (2560x1440). You have more than double the pixels of QHD and it shows.

I too, had to change settings on Witcher3 quite a bit. I.e. a mix of high and medium with post processing turned to off/low.

However, I would say it still looks better in UHD even with settings turned down.

This was on a 980Ti btw.

The only reason I prefer the Swift as a compromise is the motion clarity that I'm getting with 144hz. I'm sad that I can't have both and in reality I'm not sure I'd go for the Acer 4K monitor over the much cheaper non-gsync ones (AOC is £260 on a popular vendor's website).

However, whilst I don't see Gsync as being worth £150-200 (I've been perfectly happy t to roll without vsync up until now), maybe tearing would be more annoying on a bigger screen.. You'd have to try it and see.

AOC 4k 28"
Xeon E3 1230V3
SLI 780 3GB

Play most games at 4K but usually without AA.
Watch_Dogs struggled a bit
Shadows of Mordor really struggles
Star Citizen was a non-starter at 4K, went back to 1080p
DOTA 2 doesn't seem to like SLI, but works fine with just the single GPU

Considering going back to 1440p or getting 2x Fury / 980 Ti...

Acer XB280HK "4k2k"
Intel 5820k bone stock
Fury X.

Before I was running two Titan Black in SLI, so around 10% less performance than you will get, minus any VRAM issues. And to be honest brother I would strongly recommend you not go 4k on two GPUs. There were quite a few titles that either refused to work completely with SLI or took ages to get patched. By which time the urge to play them had worn off so yeah, I feel it kind of ruined my experience. What I mean is one 980 isn't enough to lean back on even at medium settings. Please don't underestimate the animal 4k is...

Also don't worry about your CPU at all. I used to run my 3970x @ 4.9ghz and then it broke, leaving me with only a 2ghz 8 core Xeon and believe it or not I didn't lose a single FPS. All of the strain at this res goes onto your GPU/S.

Either get a 980ti, Fury X, two of either or wait. Honestly SLI is good but there will be times where you have a real bummer. Micro stutter at 4k is quite obvious even on SLI too, given the low FPS numbers you will be playing at.

If you are going to use SLI in any shape or form get the monitor I have because it's G-sync and that really helps with low FPS and SLI and stutter.

Believe it or not I am having a much better experience sans G-sync with my Fury X, which never stutters and is actually a good 10% faster.

Ed games..

Far Cry 4. Did not work for absolutely ages and of course, one card was never enough so I didn't play it until recently.
Wolfenstein. Both modern games do not work in SLI at all.
Project Cars. Quite a bit of stuttering until it was sorted in the drivers.
GTAV. Ran beautifully on day one, patch broke it then fixed it. On one Fury X it's amazing though.

Those are recent titles that had issues.

I'm running SLI Titan X on Phillips 40" 4k...

1st EVGA SC Titan X at full price and 2nd one secondhand for 580 squids... 1480 all up plus the 600 for the monitor, so I wasn't cheap but cheaper than it could have been...

Its the best money on PC gaming I've ever spent! ;)

No compromises on settings and usually sits constant on 60fps on a 60hz monitor...

Stock clocks/reference coolers... 3930k @4.2

FPS counter usually displaying between 55-85 depending on the game...

The immersive gameplay at 4k on a 40" is incredible!

100% happy with it!

£580 for Titan X - wuuuuuut! didn't know they sold for that cheap 2nd hand. May I ask where from? My 780 is showing its age a bit ha.

Samsung U28D590 28" UHD Monitor
2x Galax Gtx 980 HOF SLI overclocked to 1520mhz core 8000mhz mem
i7 4790K overclocked to 4.8ghz
16gb Corsair 2400mhz Ram

My setup handles the 4K just fine and I don't want to game at any lower resolutions ever again. I really don't see any vram bottlenecks; a bit too much of theory that people will like to throw at you. At 4K you really don't need any AA as this makes no difference to quality at this resolution and just taxes your hardware.

The fps changes depending upon the scene, but here is a broad range of fps I experience with my setup. No AA in all cases.

Witcher 3: 50-65 fps max settings with no Hairworks. With hairworks, there can be a drop of 10fps on average
Metro Last Light Redux: 60-80 fps maxed out everything
Assasins Creed Unity: 50-65 gps maxed out everything
Project cars: mostly in 60-90 fps.
Tomb Raider: 60-90 (Benchmark at 4k average 79fps)
GTA5: 55-75 (again everything maxed out including shadows and draw distance etc)
Farcy4: 55-70 (maxed out)

As all 4k monitors available at present are 60hz max, these fps are just enough if you are happy to game around 60fps :-)

First experience with 4k (Dec - March)

Panasonic 58AX802B via MST DisplayPort
5930k/X99/16GB DDR4
295x2 + 290x (4GB)

When it worked, it was great. I did experience quite a lot of driver issues at the time and AMD were really lacking regular Crossfire profiles for new game releases.

Max Payne 3 - scaled really nicely on Ultra, though you would hit VRAM limits and experience slowdown when enabling MSAA

Dying Light - 4k was playable but AMD were lacking a Crossfire driver for a long time. I completed the game essentially using 1x GPU and it ran at about 35fps with most settings up

Far Cry 4 - Ran like a piece of arse, again AMD were lacking a crossfire driver for a long time and even when it turned up I still had issues. Even when the Crossfire driver appeared I had micro-stutter

Second Experience (March onward)
Panasonic 58AX802B via HDMI 2.0
5930k/X99/16GB DDR4
Titan X SLI (12GB)

Pretty much Flawless in every game I've tried. I'll therefore mention two games that weren't

Wolfenstein: Old Blood - The id Tech5 engine (from RAGE) doesn't support SLI/Crossfire and therefore 1x TitanX was not enough to run consistent 60fps at Ultra settings. I had to drop the resolution to 1440p for it to stay above 60fps. The tearing is horrendous with V-sync off hence the need for 60fps min at all times

Batman: Arkham Knight - Game needs work, averaged about 45fps at 4k/ultra. Problems with the game are well documented. I still managed to complete it at 4k without any issues though.

TL/DR
Much happier gaming @ 4k with Titan X SLI.

I have the Iiyama B2888UHSU and running this on a 7990 still. This monitor I have OC'd to 75hz stable.

Settings I turn down are usually blur as I dont like it, post processing as i dont like it. I dont use AA though 2x if I can on older games. Some games especially newer ones some settings I have to come one off ultra to very high.

Much to do with getting 4k as playable is as much as game patches as drivers make them work. I have moved away from getting games on release and have refrained from hardware too. I prefer to wait for a couple of patches/drivers before making the move and it's cheaper. FARCRY4 didnt work for ages on Xfire but i bought that recently and it works well on my 7990 and have been quite pleased and the game was £20.

I think 2x980's will run it very well. I love my 4k and have been in between upgrading my GPU to again - SLi/Xfire but accep[ting I have to turn down some settings I have been surprised and pleased on how the 7990 has held up. Though I've never had a 120hz> experience or G-sync.

As for settings and what is acceptable is down to the user. Some can see every flaw or notice datail tuned down tear etc. I choose not to know what to look for then I don't get drawn to it and once I am it annoys me. I notice tear sometimes in BF4 but it lasts a second or two. The ultimate visual experience is of course desirable for all of us gamers, but it depends on which level of enthusiast you you put yourself on to decide how much money to chuck at it to get that perfect experience. Good question and some good responses by owners of both 4k and 144hz G-sync. Good luck with your spending.

TX here and 4K G-Sync.

I went for the TX due to when running 4GB CF290X in 4K I oftern hit the 4GB Vram limit and with reports of some current games hitting 6GB and wanting to future proof the 980ti wasn't enough peace of mind for me either.

The TX did the job nicely, maxing out Witcher 3 @ around 40FPS, and older titles 60FPS+ but I wanted more smoothness so I had a choice of either getting another TX which can be bought for 600 quid second hand or getting a G-Sync monitor.

With all the problems surrounding SLI and having had Crossfire which never worked for the 18 months I used it I decided on a G-Sync monitor, now anything 35FPS or over which the TX does with ease on any game in 4K now feels like 60FPS, I don't have to worry about drivers for SLI on my favorite upcoming titles I want to play on release day or microstutter.

Happy gaming days.

Got it from a guy in Edinburgh via the tree of gum! Same EVGA super clock I had already... (think the adverts still there if you search EVGA Titan X?)

Yeah I was well chuffed! :D

off to search my local tree of gum, for similar fruitful purchases! :D

Acer B276HK
Gigabyte 980Ti G1 Gaming @ 1.5GHz/2GHz
i5-3450

I ran F1 2015/Assetto Corsa on the maximum possible settings at 50-60 FPS, no stuttering or anything like that. GTA:V I played on a mixture of high/very high/ultra settings with 2x MSAA, managed to get a combination that gave 45-50 FPS on average and I was really happy with it. - Definitely a huge improvement over the 980 it replaced.

Samsung hu7500 55" tv
Xeon e3-1231 3.8ghz
single 970gtx @ 1405mhz/7700mhz (don't laugh!)
All games no AA, 16xAF

Far cry 4 - 45-30fps almost everything maxed out apart from ambient occlusion and godrays.

Metro 2033 redux- 60-45fps maxed out apart from shaders I think.

Splinter cell blacklist - 60fps maxed out apart from medium ambient occlusion

Evil within - 30-25fps maxed out apart from ambient occlusion I think.

Borderlands 2 - 60-50fps maxed out

Bioshock infinite - 60fps maxed out

Company of heroes 2 - 60fps maxed out

Need for speed most wanted - 60-50fps maxed

Deus ex HR - 60fps maxed out

Not the latest games in the world but not bad for midrange card!

To throw a little spanner in the works I had 980 SLI and I thought I was happy with 4k experience till I switched to a single 980TI and imho it is a lot smoother experience with the same level of detail. eg Elite Dangerous maxed out, Dying Light everything max apart from AA and AO off

I thought due to HDMI 1.4 limit, 7990 cant support 4k at 60hz?
Then isnt playing at 30hz is kind of a nightmare?

First Thank you all

i would not go 4K with out gsync for the people wondering.

it looks the majority says go 4K.
maybe the Asus 4k swift ;)
