4k VS 1440p for gaming

While I haven't owned a 4K monitor I have given them a go on display models on the gaming machines set up for customers to try out in store and couldn't spot what all the fuss was about other than it being 4k. Yeah text is smaller but you'd expect that. It's using a high resolution on a smaller monitor so text would look sharper :p

Then the system wasn't set up correctly. Text should be the same size, using more pixels to produce better characters. Look at a letter printed at 150 dpi and one printed at 300 dpi: the characters are the same size but look far better. It's the same with screens, you just need to tell the OS the dpi and it should work out the correct font scaling.

Most games and some programs won't have the ability to dpi scale the text, some might have primitive UI scaling options.

Even in windows text/ui scaling options are a bit hit and miss if they work and how well they work.

Having played competitive FPS to a reasonable standard and struck in more hours than most on computer games both new and old over the years.

4k isn't by my definition "gaming" ready.

People are happy to spend the money will tell you it's fine and they are enjoying it and I believe they are but for people used to slick and smooth movements should avoid 4k for now. Even with Gsync and 120hz maintaining 120fps or better would require some dramatic reduction in graphical quality which would be somewhat pointless if you're upgrading to improve visual quality.

Question is is 4k gaming at low settings better than 1440p gaming at higher settings. That is a question I can't answer. I love how CSgo looks on 1440p ips panels but hate the lag and I don't have a swift :(

Absolutely this - there are some games though that are just incredible on 4K - Elite Dangerous at 4K is just something else but there is no way I'd do any serious FPS gaming on one - none the least most of the current crop are even behind IPS panels in some situations for pixel response.

I agree with this in a way... I tried CSGO yesterday on my 60hz 34 LG and yes it looks stunning the colours are gorgeous but for a game like that I found it much more enjoyable on my 144hz benq where it just feels so much more responsive to your actions which in turn made it more enjoyable.

Online fps games though are really the only games where I find I need 120hz or 144hz.
I used to play a lot of competitive cs matches and its like night and day between 60hz and 120hz plus but any other types of games it doesn't matter so much and 4k or in my case 3440x1440 is a much greater experience which is because of the resolution and the aspect ratio.
I played some Alan wake last night and it was like playing a new game with that aspect ratio and clarity.
