Hi all,
I am really close to spending on a new rig but am on a budget, my primary reason for the upgrade is to increase my rendering times in AVid Xpress Pro.
I noticed the 6600 has 4mb of cache, will I see a noticeable difference with this compared to me getting an E4300 with 2mb and Ocing to 3ghz ?

Cheers

Shorty

everyone says the cache size is only a difference while video editing, so ill guess yes.
You can clock the 6600 aswell you know :D wont overclock as much as the 4300, but does still overclock.

In my testing the extra cache is not really noticable in the real world. And I do a lot of editing.

The only massive boost I saw in rendering times etc...eas with the Quad QX6700

So Easyrider it would be worth me going for the E4300 ? I am on a AMD 939 3700 oc to 2.5ghz at the moment will I see a substantial increase in AVid rendering times with a 3ghz 4300 ?

I would go for a 6300/6400

The E4300 is only useful for cheapo mobo's as the 9x multi still allows for clocks when mobo have FSB limits of around 300.

What mobo you getting?

do ram timings make much difference for video editing? as thats another thing its good for remmeber, due to ram timings being able to stay tighter as a result of the lower FSB :)

sorry, bit drunk already :) no dinner & liverpool vs. everton = intoxication.

Yea, i should have said cheapness of ram and overclocking depends on CPU, its easier to clock CPU with cheaper ram when the CPU has a higher multiplier, as you dont have to attain a high FSB generally to reach the decent overclocks with these CPUs, due to higher multipliers.

If SLI isnt an issue get the ds3, i agree with loadsamoney there. Good stable board.

mine wont. i managed to get lumbered with a 6600 that wont go any more than 2.8.

just luck of the draw I guess.
I just don't believe you,

Send the cpu to me and I will guarantee I will get more than a 400 MHZ overclock.

What voltage and settings did you use?

Take your pick ive tried various Vcore, Vdimm, FBS and MCH voltages and I just cant get it othos stable. I started a thread about it a few weeks back but no one really came up with a definitive answer.

I’ve disabled all the usual things ect.

My ram is rated 4-4-4-12@ 2.1V and ive tried 4-4-4-12 @ 2, 2.1, 2.2 and 2.3V also 5-5-5-15 and 5-5-5-18 as well

Ive tried the MCH and FBS voltages from stock up to +0.3V

And ive took the chip from stock volts all the way up to 1.5V at only 3ghz and it absolutely will not have it. Anything above 3ghz it wont even boot into windows.

Motherboard has been RMA’ed and ive tried my ram in my mates pc and its fine.

You cant really RMA a chip because it wont overclock :(

Send it to me :D

ok the DS3 it is, still unsure of CPU though, there doesn't seem to be much between the E4300 and the 6300. I have decided agaisnt the 6600 at least now that the 4mb cache is shown not to be worth it.

The cache probably aint worth it but the average overclock is (imo). If 3 ghz is your aim though then I would simply go with 6300 & DS3.
