4TB 990 Pro vs SN850x vs ?

I'm looking to upgrade my 4TB MX500 with a faster drive and unsure between these two models, or if there is a third I should consider.

I use my machine for animation and video design primarily with After Effects, Cinema 4D.
I work with high resolution media, typically above 4k (Current canvas is 27k wide for instance...)

Read speed from multiple files and image sequence simultaneously is probably the main performance requirement.
And of course reliability..!

System Specs:
12700 (soon to be 12900k once I install it...)
RTX 4090 MSI
96GB Corsair Vengeance DDR4

2TB 970 EVO Plus (System Drive)
500GB WD Blue SN570 (Cache Drive)
4TB MX500 2.5" (Media / Projects Drive)

So dear OCUK, do you have any thoughts or suggestions on how to navigate this storage conundrum and choose the new drive?

I'm based in NL and prices are similar for both of these (280 vs 290 euros), happy to spend a bit more if it's worth it...

Thanks!

Not sure if the Kingston FURY Renegade may also be worth a look, similar read/write I believe and warranty (same length at 5 years but potentially double the endurance at 5PB vs 2.4PB for the other two).

The 990 Pro is single sided at 4TB capacity, whereas the WD 850X is double sided. Most M.2 slots support either, but could be worth noting.

The 990 Pro uses different NAND to the 2TB version, so unfortunately I have no idea where to find benchmarks comparing the 4TB SN850X and 4TB 990 Pro. Without anything better to go on, I'd expect them to be fairly similar.

I have all three in my system
990 pro 2TB
990 pro 4TB
SN850X 4TB

So i try remember to run a benchmark on them sometime over this weekend when i find some spare time

Thank you all, I think with the extra endurance on the Kingston drive I'll go with that one.

Speeds seem similar enough overall but the additional TBW feels like the safest bet!

They will both be fast.

The 990 pro is probably the faster of the the two but if price comes in to it the SN850X is not a slow drive either.

I have a 1TB SN850X and it is fast.

I would probably suggest the 4TB 990 Pro for your use case.

I have the 1GB and 2GB KC3000 M.2 from Kingston, pretty much the same underlying hardware as the Fury Renegade and they run faster than their quoted speeds. I think the 1GB KC3000 is meant to be 7,000/6,000MB/s for Read/Write and Crystal Mark shows me roughly 7,300-7,400/6,100MB/s.

Sorry i forgot to do this last weekend :o

I got admit the results are very different to what i was expecting with the Q8T1 speeds between them

But do note my 4TB 990 pro is installed on one of these PCI riser cards so i don't know if this will effect the speeds

The only time that riser would impact performance is if it's in a slot that's CPU vs chipset connected (slight latency hits there) or slower (eg a PCI-E 3.0 slot). Otherwise signalling wise electrically the same as the M.2.

Thanks for all the input everyone. Slightly delayed but have finally gotten to installing the new drive - Big speed improvement and I look forward to seeing how this affects things in real world workloads!

Other drives in my system because we all love stats:

Cache Drive (Will also be replacing with a 1tb Kingston Fury): M.2 WD Blue 500gb

System Drive: M.2 Samsung 970 Evo Plus 2tb

I was quite surprised how close the WD Blue and 970 Evo are too.
