Ive currently gota set of logitech Z5400's, but ive been sitting thinking, i just got a xfi sound card and i cant get the the speaker fill to work for mp3's :( but while ive been without the rear speaker ive been thinking, do i really need them? im not a movie enthusiast, i never notice or pay attention to 5.1 in games and my rented room next year is gonna be small so i wont get the best placement for them either! so! how much would i be looking to get a nice set of speakers plus and amp im guessing to play music and games? i know nothing about amps quality or prices :s oh and would it be better? thanks

oh and i dont care about size, can be floor standing or bookshelf

Get a proper amp and a set of bookshelf speakers and you'll be laughing. How much are you looking to spend on improving your setup?

You'll get all of that for about £500 ;)

A good stereo system will sound better than a similary priced 5.1 system, however you won't get multi-channel enveloplment.

Ignore the post about Aego's, yes they're better than cheaper 2.1 systems, but not near proper Hi-Fi gear.

Connecting your PC to an amp is the least of your worries and is accomplished by using a headphone jack to phono cable available at loads of high street stores.

The sky is the limit as far as cost goes, but you could get something good second hand for £200.

Well the cost is what i was wondering :) i finish uni in a week then im gonna work extra hours to fund it lol so maybe £250 - £450 maybe ive read the sticky in the hi fi section for a bit of background knowledge! i see the type of music plays quite a big part in choice of components. I listen to a lot of rock and electro rocky stuff, gary numans new stuff for instance, so i want a bit of base :) oh and i like my music loud :P

so what makes models do people reccomend, il be looking for s/h stuff obviously to keep costs down.

thanks for your help! id be lost otherwise :(

£250 won't get you anything, but £450 will get you into budget seperates, say Rotel integrated amp £250 and £200 speakers. Not incredible but fine as your first proper audio system.

Isnt the point of 5.1 that the subwoofer has its own deticated channel from source, ie. soundcard, while 2.1 doesn't?
I mean you cant controll the sub volume with your soundcard on 2.1, while you can on 5.1?

£250 will get something decent enough for a first timer new, and probably something reasonable second hand if some research is done. I agree that spending a little more at the start helps a lot, the upgrade bug is hard to fight.
