More accurately, 4 questions about 5.1 ;-)

I have just bought a new system and am currently using the onboard audio on an Asus P5Q Pro board. I have an old Cambridge Soundworks 4.1 system which is working ok but was considering getting a 5.1 speaker system.

Questions:
1) Is it worth my going to 5.1?
2) Will onboard audio be ok (gaming, some background music, no movies though), or is it pointless unless I shell out for a dedicated card too?
3) Is the Logitech X-540 good, is it worth paying the extra £20 to get the Creative Inspire T6200?
4) How long are the speaker cables for the rears of these systems, and can they be changed for longer ones?

Thanks

I'll give it a shot:

1)I think so, it's more widely supported now than 4.1 and I enjoy it in games and blu-rays.
2)On the Asus it's good, but not as good as a dedicated card of course. This depends on how much cash you have and how much you care about sound quality. Personally I think my x-fi is streets ahead of the realtek onboard I have.
3)The logitech are nice entry level speakers, as are the creative, I doubt there's much in it with sound quality, i'd tend to go for looks/warranty at this level.
4)My creative inspire rear cables are not very long, probably about 1.3m. They can be extended i'm sure, you'll just need the right connectors or some patience in rewiring it yourself. However, mine are adequately long since my amp/bass unit is not far from them, remembering that 5.1 rears aren't really rear, more side.

i had a Logitech X-540 system and the cables for the rear satellites were rather long. maybe 2 or 3 meters.

It is worth upgrading to 5.1 now as it the format is used on almost every DVD released, satalite broadcasts, games, music (SACD, DVD Audio), and Blu-Ray. It is a format that is becoming increasingly popular as more and more people discover the wonders of home cinema and surround sound gaming.
