Hang on a sec..

The insurance company more or less prevented my driving anything faster than a snail in my first year. This car was not out of choice, more of necessity. It came up, it was cheap and slow enough to prevent bumming by insurance companies. Given the choice i would have had something different but it was a case of needing a car and this coming up. I hate my escort in everyway, it's slow, fuel economy is terrible, ride and handling is questionable and the engine is crap. Do you really think i'd drive a 55BHP heap of crap out of choice? The thing is it has served me well, it has never broken down and i have put 5k Miles on it and it hasn't missed a beat, what more could i demand for a £500 first car.

As soon as i get 1 years NCB i can consider a much better car and among my shortlist are only two fords nestled amongst BMWs, seats, Hondas, toyotas and audis to name a few. My next car doesn't have to be a ford, i wont break out in hives if i don't buy a ford, it's just i dislike the micra.

Shortlist??

With most car manufacturer out there? thats no shortlist :p

a k11 micra auto???
way under budget and can have aircon (iirc), power steering (my crap 1litre has that) and auto. The autos arent bad (for a small car) and reliability is very good.

They go up to 03 reg and provided you can get over the crappy look/image they are good cars for non car people.

You sure you want automatic, my grandad has arthuritis in his hands and wrists, he can't operate an automatic gearbox. Cant pull or push the button to change the mode.
Has she tried one before, if not, make sure she does before getting one some of the mechanisms can be quite stiff.

Look into an older honda jazz possibly?

I PERSONALLY hate the micra because it looks like it was put together by a 5 year old.

What has that got to do with how good a car it is and how suitable it is for the original poster's mother? I hate the looks of the BMW 7 Series but if someone says that they want a comfortable car to drive to the South of France in and they don't car about fuel economy, I'd say it fits the bill perfectly. The Micra fits the original poster's criteria perfectly. It's a decent small car. It's then up the original poster's mother to try one out and decide if it suits her.

The Fiesta's also a decent small car but having never driven the automatic version, it would hardly be appropriate for me to recommend a car that I haven't driven (in automatic form.) Unlike you, I don't want to make wild guesses about a car I haven't driven or owned.

that is my opinion and it may be incorrect.

No s*** Sherlock!

my Escort

Says it all really. Probably one of the worst cars in existence (if indeed, any of them are still on the road).

...and why are you going on about Fiesta STs and Mini Coopers being a 'hoot'. They're completely irrelevant (as well as being outside the budget). If the original poster's mother has arthritis in her wrists, she hardly going to be wanting a car that she can slam through hairpin bends and steering with a lot of feel and feedback through the rim, is she?

Which brings me back to the answer to the original questions, which is that a Micro 1.2 SVE, auto, aircon suits the original criteria perfectly.

In relation to the original OP,

Because automatics are not well suited to very small engines, the quality of the gearbox should play a large part in choosing a small auto.

I have already recommended both Micra and Fiesta, but here are some other alternatives that may be worth considering/dismissing.

Avoid the Yaris Automatic, it has the worst autobox I've ever used and lurches between changes severely.

Another choice is the Chevrolet Kalos, whilst it's pretty plasticy and tacky inside as well as average to drive, the autobox is a good one and the car will be cheap as chips to buy, need to get over the image though!

Honda Jazz is a good buy but very expensive as it holds on to its value well.

Corsa (new shape) auto is acceptable, but the car isn't particularly comfortable.

I was explaining why i don't like the micra, I had already posted my recommendation, i was mostly answering to your stupid replies

This is exactly why i recommended the fiesta, i have a lot more experience with fiestas. From the very few people i know who have owned the new micra an even smaller amount would recommend one. Granted they did have the new model as soon as it came out so it may have had teething troubles.

If you read my other post you would have seen that i did not purchase the escort out of choice, it came up and it was cheap and wouldn't bum me on the insurance. My escort is a terrible car hence why i wouldn't recommend one for any other use than a cheap banger. Once i have 1 years NCB i can consider something that isn't a heap of crap.

No, I was simply stating the fact that i am not a fanyboy and i am open to ANY car. I have already made my recommendation. I am aware that I haven't owned a Micra, nor would i ever dream of owning one but its not to say that i can't base my veiws on other people's experiences.

i'm not going to argue any further as it is detracting from the purpose of the thread.

5-6k for someone getting on with that spec...

id be looking at an Merc A-Class. the 1.6 auto is nippy enough and spacious inside, all the toys and a good height to get into, really easy. very easy car to drive :)

I can back this statement too having driven one. the Auto box is actually very good.

I would if it didn't look like a frog that has been bitch-slapped by Optimus Prime.

I get the impression that You hate the look of the micra, (which is fair enough, i do to)... but then you spouted stuff about it feeling floaty when you were in one...

i think you are probably just making that bit up to add weight to your dislike for micras
