Yeah I remember from the looting in America a few months back, stolen iPhones were locked and telling them to return it to the store. I'd imagine all of these stolen devices are locked and pretty much paperweights at this point.

What is the point of stealing phones these days as I believe any phone can be disabled like that.

The iPhones can be IMEI barred by Apple which makes them useless as phones to everyone.

It's on the side of every phone box so I'd be very surprised if each barcode wasn't scanned as it was loaded onto the pallet and then they'll know which pallets are on the waggon.

Considering the amount of security in iPhones these days down to the hardware level I'd be very surprised if being able to change the IMEI was enough these days.

Well at least if you nicked some cheese you could eat it and get rid of the evidence. Thief's should know by now that if they steal an Apple product it can become useless.

Any device blacklisted in the U.K. should eventually become blacklisted across all networks in the EU and North America as they’re meant to sync this info in their respective Equipment Information Registers. Whether they apply an IMEI check on first registration is very much down to the networks.

Not just for dramatic effect, it is the value which will be used for any prosecution.
