5 Monitor Flight Simulator

So what if that company makes a better gtx570 version? someone check.

I think they also did a wireless card that transmitted the signals to each monitor

ok, if we need active adapters then i have found a mini displayport to displayport adapter on the rainforest for £7

you can use that, then the active adapter, then the monitors VGA cable for some super happy fun time with cables

i've officially had enough of this for tonight

The forest also sells mini displayport to VGA for £9.95. It doesn't need to be active if you're converting the displayport signal to VGA singals. Using a passive Displayport to VGA here at the moment. Getting these adapters then using the normal VGA cables that come with the monitors should be good enough. That will solve the 2 VGA needs.

I would love to see the OPs face when he comes back to his thread...information overload or what lol

Do we even know if the OP needs an OS, keyboard & mouse & flight yoke? lol

I still think that 4 display port screens makes things easier. If we sacrifice the SSD and the heatsink, reapers build with those screens should come in just over £1,400 with free delivery.....oh add a tenner for two mini-DP to DP cables, the monitors im sure will have the other two DVI cables needed supplied with them. Ok it's one less screen than they asked for but it's still one hell of a setup!

The SSD is a nice addition but the system will still run fine without it. I think it'll be easier to justify to the cadets spending £180 on a HD Display port screen for eyefinity rather than on a SSD. Although I fully understand why you guys are working so hard to fit it in the budget! I look forward to seeing the OPs thoughts.

Note to self don't post in the small hours, when i'm not thinking clearly lol

Having slept on it. Buy 3 non DP monitors and one active adapter to cover the DP requirement. Instead of the two cheap additional monitors, purchase the Track ir unit. Im not sure OC sell it though sadly. Think of it as xbox's Kinect for flight sims. I'll attach a link so you can see it working.

Essentially it tracks the persons head movement so they can look around the cockpit naturally. If they move their head closer to the screen it will zoom in on the instruments so they can be seen clearly.

The unit itself will cost around the same as a 22 inch non DP monitor. However the effect is more immersive and will work out cheaper than getting two screens for the instruments. Certainly worth showing them the video and explain it makes the build easier and cheaper ;)

THe 6950 has two DVI, HDMI and 2 Display port. So only one active adpater is needed.

The other two monitors can use their DVI connections. With the track ir the other screens wont be necessary.....no more adpater headaches YAY and infact the cheaper 6870 might just cut it if they need to save money towards an OS or what have you.

Looking forward to seeing how this works out. Would be nice if the OP could post some pics or a vid of it in action when complete ;)

Evening all,

Had a few words with the other members of the team helping me put this thing together and there are a few points I was hoping you may be able to help me with...

If we were to have only one graphics card (because FSX apparently doesn't like more than one), how would we go about connecting five monitors to one card? Is it a simple case of using a wire, or is there a more complex and more expensive method we'd need to use? I may have mentioned before, but the plan is to have 3 monitors on the top displaying the scenery, and two monitors at the bottom displaying cockpit controls.

In terms of the monitors, I think we have come round to the idea of rotating them 90 degrees, because we intend to mount them on a wall - will any monitor allow for this or do we need specific ones?

We are looking to put an order in for this in the next couple of days so I really appreciate all the help you've given me so far, I just have a few more questions.

Cheers guys, I'll buy you all a pint.

Wall mount - any monitor with a VESA mount.
Rotation - is done in Windows so accepted by all monitors.

Cheers mate, do you know much about hooking 5 monitors up to one graphics card?

We're been discussing this like crazy, hence why there's so many pages :p.

Personally I would get this card: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-255-AS&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=1752

This card has 2 DVIs and 4 Displayports. You can then grab as many of these adapters to convert the Displayport to VGA. You will need three of them for your setup. Hence with the 2 DVIs and 3 DP->VGA, you will have a total of 5 outputs.

Cheers mate - with our budget we could get a card for double the price, any recommendations for a higher spec card?

As above orcvader hasnt explained the basics.

I had suggested the Track IR module in a previous post. Has this been dismissed?

That card is on offer to you cheap on preorder. It will allow you to run 3 screens without an adapter.

That vid shows how the flex cards work although that is a different series. If you wanted to add another 2 screens you would need an active adapter.

A flex card with 3 DVI screens in landscape and the track ir would be the most realistic and simple setup. They could consider adding two additional identical monitors later and have 5 screens in portrait to further improve the setup.

Hope that covers most of your questions in one post

I'm sorry if I am asking what seem like very simple questions, but I just need to make sure we get the right kit.

With the above mentioned card, I could easily run 5 monitors off it, 2 DVI and 3 from the other ports - which could be easily converted with an adapter?
